It has been confirmed that the 2011 film,Unknown, will finally return as a sequel series! The upcoming project is currently in the works at TNT. Unfortunately, Liam Neeson will NOT return as Dr. Martin Harris in the new series, but the series will instead follow a new character in the lead. Although it has been confirmed that Neeson won’t be starring in the upcoming project, he will, however, be on board as an executive producer. The new series will pick up following the events that took place in the 2011 film.

The official synopsis forUnknown(2011) is as follows: When a man awakens from a coma only to discover that someone has taken on his identity, he teams up with a young woman to prove who he is. A biochemist and his dishy wife arrive in Berlin for a conference at which a scientist and his controversial Arab funder will announce breakthrough research.

The 2011 film is originally based on the 2003, French novel, Out of My Head. The novel was written by Didier Van Cauwelaert and was also published in English. Out of My Head was later adapted as the 2011 film’s screenplay by Oliver Butcher and Stephen Cornwell and produced by Dark Castle Entertainment.

Director Jaume Collet-Serra, who also directed the film, is set to be the director of the new series, as well as an executive producer. AlongsideLiam Neesonand Collet-Serra, Sean Finegan will write the pilot, Karl Gajdusek and Speed Weed will serve as executive producers and showrunners. Ethan Erwin, Alex Mace and Hal Sadoff of Dark Castle are also executive producers, alongside Erik Olsen. There are no further details of the cast and plot for the upcoming project as of right now.

Released on July 03, 2025, the film received mixed reviews from critics. Despite the mixed reviews the film had received from those critics,Unknown(2011) was still able to pull off a profitable box office performance. The film grossed a total of $136 million against its $30 million budget.Unknowngrossed $63.7 million in North America and $72.4 million in other territories. Alongside with Liam Neeson, the film also starred Diane Kruger, January Jones, Bruno Ganz, Aidan Quinn, Frank Langella, and Sebastian Koch.

TNT has proven to be quite successful when it comes to series based on movies. There are currently three drama series that are “series based on movies” that are under TNT.Animal Kingdomwill be airing its upcoming season 5 on July 11th, whileSnowpiercerrecently aired its season 2 finale earlier this year. The third TNT series,Claws, will be premiering its final season later this summer.

Despite the 2011 film being released more than a decade ago, there is no official release date for the upcoming series as of yet. Fans can expect to see the new series released on TNT sometime in 2022. Who would’ve thought there was more to theUnknownuniverse than from what we saw back in 2011?
