The world is still in an unfortunate, never-ending holding pattern, waiting for someone to make aZeldamovie of some kind. There may be no property in the history of video games that seems more ripe for a movie adaptation. For now, we can check out this new fan film by EmberLab based onThe Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, which is in a word, stunning.
The company dropped the movie, which is titledMajora’s Mask - Terrible Fate, on theirYouTubechannel recently. The only thing that was missing was a message at the end saying “for your consideration” to the Academy Award voters, because this thing is excellent. On one hand, it will definitely make fans of theZeldagames super happy and on the other hand, it will frustrate them, because there is a great movie sitting out there just waiting to be made. Here is what they had to say about it in the post that accompanied the video on YouTube.
“A tribute to the legendary game, this short showcases Skull Kid’s dark origin story. Our take on how theZelda Universecould be realized in film. A labor of love for all those involved, this is a gift to the fans.”
EmberLab may not have had a whole to say about the short film, other than that it was a “labor of love” and that it is a “gift for all .” Given how good it looks and how detailed it was, no doubt it must have been a labor of love, because it must have taken forever to make. They also say that thisMajora’s Maskstory could be a good way to spin theZeldafranchise off into a movie. There are quite a fewZelda gamesa studio could do that with, butMajora’s Maskis maybe the most interesting story-wise and is definitely one of the most dark stories from that universe.
The Legend of ZeldaMajora’s Mask takes place mostly in a land called Termina, separate from the typical setting of Hyrule in mostZeldagames. The story centers on The Skull Kid, who has been transformed by a cursed mask and tricks Link into coming to Termina. Link must try and stop the moon from falling to the planet’s surface and destroying it. Link repeatedly lives out the same three-day period while trying to stop this event from happening, sort of likeGroundhog’s Daybut without the laughs. Skull Kid is a huge part of the game, but how he came across Majora’s Mask wasn’t explored in the game. This short explores that part of the story in gorgeous and tragic fashion.
Nintendo has a newZeldagame in the works right now which will be coming out for their new console, the Nintendo Switch. Maybe ifAssassin’s Creeddoes will this December that will encourage someone to finally do aZelda movie. They would be wise to contact the guys from EmberLab, because they know what they are doing.
