YellowstonestarKevin Costnerhas just picked up his next starring role in a Western film, but this time, he’ll be back in the director’s chair as well for the first time since 2003’sOpen Range.Costner is on board to direct the period WesternHorizonwith production slated to start in Utah on Aug. 29. Costner is also set to star in the movie in addition to producing and financing it through his Territory Pictures production company.

Full plot details haven’t been revealed about the project or Costner’s character. No additional casting announcements have yet been made either, but casting is set to begin in February. What has been said about the tsory is that it will chronicle “a multi-faceted, 15-year span of pre- and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American west.”

“America’s expansion into the west was one that was fraught with peril and intrigue from the natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land, and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it,” Costner said of the film, perDeadline. “Horizontells the story of that journey in an honest and forthcoming way, highlighting the points of view and consequences of the characters' life and death decisions.”

This is significant that Costner has chosen this film to be his next movie as a director. He has garnered great acclaim with his past work, which includes the Best Picture winnerDances with Wolvesreleased in 1990. He also starred in and produced that movie as well, which also earned Costner two Oscars as a producer and director. Costner also directed 1997’sThe Postman, in which he also produced and starred in, as well as 2003’sOpen Range, which featured Costner in a lead role alongside Robert Duvall.

Kevin Costner Continues to Star in Paramount’s Western Series Yellowstone

Meanwhile, Kevin Costner is also a star and executive producer of the Paramount Network seriesYellowstone, which premieredits fourth seasonin November. The series continues to be a ratings juggernaut for the network and has been acclaimed with awards recognition. Costner and the other cast members were nominated for Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild awards. The show was also just nominated for Best Episodic Drama after debuting season 4.

Yellowstonefollows the conflicts along the shared borders of a large cattle ranch, an Indian reservation, and land developers. Along with Kevin Costner, the show stars Luke Grimes, Wes Bentley, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Gil Birmingham. Taylor Sheridan and John Linson created the show for Paramount Network. Because of its continued popularity, it was also given its own prequel spinoff series called1883, which premiered on Paramount+ in December to high viewership and strong ratings. Another spinoff,6666, is in development at Paramount+ as well.

The fifth season ofYellowstoneis expected to premiere sometime later this year on Paramount Network.Horizondoes not yet have an official release date attached.
