We can all feel it coming. Even those unaware of the impending conclusion to the newest trilogy in this decades-long dino dynasty were gifted theJurassic World Dominiontrailer during Super Bowl LVI. Capitalizing on the themes of nostalgia that permeated this year’s big game, evidenced by commercial references to cult classics and a halftime show featuring an assortment of hip-hop artists sure to tickle the nostalgia bone of even the most fickle millennial viewer, this visually stunning trailer was primarily a showcase for its equally stunning cast.

It gave us brief glimpses oforiginalJurassic Parkactors Sam Neill(Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park III), returning as Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Marriage Story) reprising her role as Dr. Ellie Sattler, and the quirky Jeff Goldblum (Thor: Ragnarök, Independence Day) as Dr. Ian Malcolm. Rounding out this cadre of old favorites are the stars of the most recent few installments in theJurassic Worldseries; Bryce Dallas Howard (Black Mirror, Spider-Man 3) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Parks and Recreation).

But who cares? Did fans walk into the theaters in 1993 to watch Jeff Goldblum deliver a monologue about how “Life, Uh, Finds a Way?” Not a chance! They came to see dinosaurs. Despite an ever-changing world, it is an inalienable law of nature that dinosaurs will always be cooler than anything. With that in mind, let’s look past the star-studded cast ofJurassic World Dominionand ask the real, pressing questions; which reptiles will make it to the big screen?

A Ferocious Feathered Foe… or Friend?

Most folks have heard that the closest modern-day descendants of the dinosaurs are birds. The T-Rex turned into a chicken, as it were. But new evidence has suggested the monstrous lizards who dominated the prehistoric landscape might night have been quite so intimidating as Mr. Spielberg would have you believe. In fact, dinosaurs probably had feathers. The newest trailer forJurassic World Dominionseems to bear this in mind.

An unknown dinosaur, thought to be a Therizinosaurus, pursued our heroes in the recently released trailer with teeth fully bared. Though some of our old favorite dinos, to be discussed later, will remain suspiciously absent of feathering, the scientifically minded movie-goer will be pleased to see this reflection of modern archeological discovery on the big screen. Given that this species may have been herbivorous, the ferocious feathered beast might prove a useful ally.

The Terrifying Tyrannosaurus

Is it really even aJurassic Parkmovie without an appearance from the king? The Tyrannosaurus Rex is undoubtedly the most iconic dinosaur of all time and an integral staple of theJurassic Parkfranchise. Initially a cause for immense terror, the T-Rex found itself cast in the role of protagonist in several instances throughout the history of this film series. First, when one takes on a crew of velociraptors during the original film’s climax, and then years later, when a T-Rex faces its own genetically engineered super offspring in the firstJurassic Worldmovie. Whether the king of the dinosaurs returns to assist in a fight against some potential fire-breathing, acid-spewing, invisibility-shielding, voice-mimicking, mind-controlling freak of dinosaur engineering in the new film, or we find our impressive cast in a good ol' fashioned T-Rex chase, one can only hope for a return of this crowd favorite lizard.

Chris Pratt and His Vicious Velociraptors

Since the original Jurassic World film, Chris Pratt, in his role as formerJurassic Park velociraptor trainer Owen Grady, has commanded a crew of these ingenious lizards. They have had a storied history in theJurassic Parkfranchise, employing their advanced dinosaur intellect to terrifying effect in previous series installments. However, in the most recent run of films, Chris Pratt’s Owen Grady has often utilized his well-trained crew of velociraptors in key combat situations throughout theJurassic Worldfilms. In the recently releasedJurassic World Dominiontrailer, which features Owen Grady winding through narrow city streets on a miniature motorcycle, flanked on all sides by a snarling crew of lizards, we see that the series will not fail to deliver on the long-standing antiheroes of theJurassic Parkuniverse – the voracious velociraptor.
