When John Cena was revealed as part of theBarbiecast, it was obviously as some big, muscly version of Ken right? Wrong! As Warner Bros unveiled an extended look at the upcoming Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie movie at their CinemaCon session, it included new looks of the multi-colored world created for the film and some of its occupants – one of which is a mermaid that looks very, very much likeJohn Cena.
Naturally, fans will have to wait a little longer to see Cena getting fishing with it for themselves, but from the descriptions coming from the event the film is certainly living up to its reputation as one of the most unexpected movies of the summer. What makes the reveal about Cena’s character more unexpected is that won’t be the only one donning a fishtail for the movie, as songstress Dua Lipa will also be appearing as a mermaid in the movie. Earlier in the month it was reported by The Sun that Lipa had been filming in London, but at the time there was no mention of Cena’s role, presumably because at the time it was still a secret. They said at the time:

“Dua has been in London filming for the Barbie film and has really thrown herself into it. She is playing a beautiful mermaid and has been having fun with role and made it her own. There are going to be loads of special effects added afterwards to make her character look as good as possible on screen, so filming it has been a bit weird.”

From the moment the film was announced, everyone involved in the production made it clear that this wasnot aBarbiemovie that anyone expects, and that at least seems to be true. Whether it turns out to be a good thing or not is yet to be seen, but the new footage gave a further hint that the movie is going to bring its own meta universe to life.
In another part of the extended look, Margot Robbie’s Barbie is seen being asked by Kate McKinnon’s “weird Barbie” whether she wants to know the truth about her “Matrix-like” existence and of course we know that the answer to that question is going to be yes.
As well as the extended footage, the movie tagline was teased as “If you love Barbie…if you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.” Greta Gerwig was joined by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling to present the footage, and offered up some surprising extra details such as describing Gosling’s performance as Ken being played “like Marlon Brando playing Ken.”
If that wasn’t enough to get you intrigued by the movie then it seems that despite the tagline, this movie may not be for you. For everyone else however, the truth about Barbie’s world and how everything fits together, including John Cena’s mermaid, will be revealed in all its Technicolor glory on July 21.
