We haven’t seen the last of Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord, as theDoctor Whostar has confirmed she will be back in the role for her third season. First joining the series in the 2017 Christmas special, Whittaker became the thirteenth Doctor when she took over the role from Peter Capaldi. She is now in the midst of her second full season ofDoctor Who, and the actress is going to stick around as the Doctor for at least one more after this, as Whittaker has confirmed she’ll be playing the part for at least three seasons.
Speaking about her work onDoctor Who,Jodie Whittaker had this to saywhen asked if she would definitely be returning to the show after the current season comes to an end.
“Yes, I’m doing another season. That might be a massive exclusive that I’m not supposed to say, but it’s unhelpful for me to say [I don’t know] because it would be a massive lie! [Laughs] I absolutely adore it. At some point, these shoes are going to be handed on, but it’s not yet. I’m clinging on tight!”
Thecurrent season of Doctor Whois set to air its finale in March, and given how often the role changes hands, there’s always speculation from fans over when the next Doctor will be introduced into the series. Whittaker’s confirmation that she’ll be around for at least three seasons will put her on par with the man she replaced, with Capaldi serving as the Doctor for three seasons between 2014 and 2017. As it stands now, Whittaker’s second season onDoctor Whoplaces her above Christopher Eccleston, whose run as the ninth Doctor spanned for just a single season.
Whittaker might be the thirteenth performer to play the Doctor, but she’s thefirst woman to ever step into the iconic role. Fans of the show will always rank their favorites differently, but for the most part, Whittaker has been very well-received by critics and longtimeDoctor Whofans for her work on the show. Of course, no new Doctor would be complete without some companions, and Whittaker’s thirteenth Doctor has three portrayed by Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole, and Bradley Walsh. This season, the Doctor and her companions will be taking on the Cybermen, and the filming process has been fun for Whittaker. “They’ve got alotof presence on set,” Whittaker says of the cyborgs.
Though she won’t be departingDoctor Whoin the immediate future, Whittaker still acknowledges that it’s a matter of time before she’ll be handing off the sonic screwdriver to another performer. “At some point, these shoes are going to be handed on, but it’s not yet,” Whittaker says of her role as the Doctor.
