This spring’sBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicehelped establish Warner Bros.‘DCEU, which introducedBen Affleck’s Batman,Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and the rest of theJustice League,Aquaman(Jason Momoa),The Flash(Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher). The movie also introducedJeremy Irons’ Alfred Pennyworth, who will return in the highly-anticipatedJustice Leagueand the standalone movieThe Batman.Jeremy Ironsrevealed in a new interview that we’ll see much more of Alfred in at least one of those movies.
Varietycaught up withJeremy Irons, who is promoting his new dramaThe Man Who Knew Infinity, where the actor teased that he’d have a sizable role inThe Batman. However, when asked if he’ll have a bigger role inJustice League, the actor revealed he will have a role comparable toBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here’s what he had to say below, when asked if he’ll have more to do inJustice League.
“Similar, but then, of course,Ben’s going to make aBatman filmnext summer. He promises me there’s going to be a bit more of Alfred in that. In theJustice Leaguewe have seven major lead characters and I’m the butler to one of them. It’s clear I will not be dominating that film. I love working withBenandZack Snyder. They’ve been fun.”
Jeremy Ironsis certainly not the first actor to play the iconicAlfred Pennyworth, but it was clear that this version of the character was much different than previous incarnations. As it turns out, the actor was inspired by men who worked for the actor’s late neighbor,Paul Getty. Here’s what he had to say about the men who inspired his version of Alfred Pennyworth.
“I remember an evening with Paul Getty, who was a neighbor of mine, now sadly dead. We drove up to his lovely house. A very nice gentleman opened up the car door. Then another very nice gentleman took the car and parked it somewhere. Another nice gentleman took my coat. And then another nice gentleman gave me a glass of champagne. And all those nice gentlemen were SAS. I thought, that’s Alfred. He’s a man who will take care of his boss, whether he’s making coffee or pouring champagne or flying his airplane.”
Production recently wrapped onJustice League, which is set for release on July 08, 2025, with reports surfacing that filming begins onBen Affleck’sThe Batmanin the Spring of 2017. It hasn’t been confirmed that filming will begin at that time yet, and Warner Bros. hasn’t set an official release date quite yet.
