Fans excited about the DCU take on theTeen Titansare bound to be disappointed by the latest update from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn. It was recently confirmed thatAna Nogueira would be penning the script for the DCU’sWonder Woman. However, Nogueira is not only the writer for the upcomingSupergirlfilm, but was also hired to pen a script forTeen Titansback in September 2024. This led many to believe that Nogueira got the gig forWonder Womanfollowing how much bothSupergirlandTeen Titansscripts must have dazzled DC Studios.

Unfortunately, it appears that theTeen Titansscript is nowhere close to being finished. Gunn said, via Threads, that the script forthe film “does not exist. She’s been on WW for a while.” Even though the news just broke that Nogueira was working onWonder Womanjust a week ago, Gunn implies that she has been working on it for some time, possibly getting it shortly after being hired forTeen Titans. Gunn later clarified, stating that Nogueira was working onTeen Titansbut did not complete the script before he asked her to writeWonder Woman. In short, Nogueira worked on aTeen Titansscript, but it was never finished, and Gunn has not read it.

James Gunn Addresses DCU Wonder Woman Casting Report: “Never in a Million Years”

Update: James Gunn has commented on the report, debunking that ‘Wonder Woman’ is looking for a specific actor.

Teen Titans is easily one of DC’s most popular but underutilized brands. The New Teen Titansin the 1980s helped make the team the icons they are today. With two generations now having grown up with the team, thanks to the 2003Teen Titansanimated series and thecontinued popularity ofTeen Titans Go!, they are poised for anX-MenorTransformers-level breakout when they leap into live-action films. This is why the news of aTeen Titansmovie back in 2024 not only made sense but also seemed exciting. With Gunn confirming that a DC Studios movie will not move forward without a finished script, it will be quite some time untilTeen Titansgets off the ground.

Will the Teen Titans Still Make Their DCU Debut?

The pieces forTeen Titansappear to be falling into place across other DCU titles.Brave and the Boldwill feature the Damian Wayne version of Robin, and it is rumored to have roles for other Bat-Family members, including Dick Grayson’s Nightwing.Xolo Maridueña is set to return as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetlein an animated series loosely connected to his 2023 film, possibly giving him a role on the Teen Titans. Meanwhile, with Nogueira now writingWonder WomanandTeen Titans, she could be planting the seeds for Wonder Girl before she joins the team, similar to Supergirl’s cameo inSuperman, leading into her feature film.

Now thatTeen Titansis seemingly taking a backseat, both DC Studios and Marvel Studios are now struggling to get projects based on a group of teen superheroes off the ground. Despiteplanting the seeds for The Young Avengersacross titles likeMs. Marvel,Hawkeye,Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, andAgatha All Along, Marvel Studios has not officially announced a film or Disney+ series. It will be interesting to see if DC can steal a march on Marvel to get a team of teenage superheroes to the big screen, or if this slight delay will finally give Marvel the chance to catch up.
