James Gunnis not too happy that a few of his characters are in the DCEU. Gunn’s DCU is a new, separate universe that also includes DCEU titles likeThe Suicide SquadandPeacemakerin. Given that James Gunn created those two projects, which were, for the most part, standalone entities, they could feasibly exist in both the DCEU and DCU without issue. However, Emilia Harcourt, played by James Gunn’s wife, Jennifer Holland, appears in bothBlack AdamandShazam! Fury of the Gods, with Steve Agee’s John Economos, is the mid-credit scene of the latter, tying them and their films into the messy canon of the DC cinematic universe.
Speaking withDen of Geek, Gunn clarifies that neitherBlack AdamnorShazam! Fury of the Godsis canon to the DCU, despite both titles featuring Emilia Harcourt and John Economos. Both Harcourt and Economos, who debuted in 2021’sThe Suicide Squad, received larger roles inPeacemakerand willreturn in the series' upcoming second season. Regarding the canon of bothBlack AdamandShazam! Fury of the Gods, Gunn did not hold back, saying

“They’re not canon! I hate it!”
‘Shazam!’ Star Open to DCU Return as Fan-Casting Heats Up for Wonder Woman
Grace Caroline Currey is open to returning to the DCU and touches on fans' desire to see her as the new Wonder Woman.
While Gunn did not say he hated the films themselves, he is clearly not a fan of howBlack AdamorShazam! Fury of the Godsused characters he had plans for. His actual thoughts on the movies themselves are unknown, though this is not the first time he hascommented on the post-credit scene forShazam! Fury of the Gods. Harcourt’s role inBlack Adamis particularly frustrating, as she is running an ARGUS prison facility that the Justice Society brought Black Adam to, despitePeacemakerSeason 2 ending with her still on the reformed Task Force X in the hit HBO Max series.

The Confusing Nature of Emila Harcourt & John Economos Cameos
The use of Harcourt and Economos inShazam! Fury of the Godsis interesting for several reasons. Those two characters were not originally intended to appear in the film’s post-credits scene, as it wasdesigned to feature members of the Justice Society fromBlack Adamrecruiting Billy Batson/Shazam! Reportedly, Dwayne Johnson blocked the use of those characters inShazam! Fury of the Gods, forcing Peter Safran, now Gunn’s co-president of DC Studios, to call in a favor and get Holland and Agee to film the scene. However, Gunn was in charge of DC Studios before the release ofShazam! Fury of the Godsand yet did not remove the scene. It was within his power to do so, as the ending ofThe Flashwas reshoot to feature George Clooney as a gag.
Even with appearances by Amanda Waller, Emila Harcourt, and John Economos,Black AdamandShazam! The Fury of the Gods' DCU canon status has seemingly never been up for debate, as both films are clearly not canon.Black Adamconcludes with Henry Cavill’s Superman, who David Corenswet has since replaced. Meanwhile, Zachary Levi’s controversial comments regarding vaccines andthe decision to back Donald Trump in the 2024 electionpretty much confirm that if Shazam does return to the DCU, it will be with a different actor. In a sad way, despite Shazam and Black Adam being arch-rivals, their two films largely ignore one another, with the only overt connection between the two feature films being the presence of Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt, who now exists as two different versions in the DC multiverse.
