Is Fast & Furious 8 Bringing Back Paul Walker's Brian O'Conner?

Furious 7accomplished a great many things, not the least of which was giving an incredibly touching sendoff to the latePaul Walkerand his character Brian O’Conner. Given the way the movie ended, it seemed likely that was the last time we would ever seeWalker’s character in the franchise, but that may not be the case. As it turns out,Vin Dieselhas had conversations about potentially bringing back Brian infuture Fast and Furious installments.

Paul Walker’s brothersCalebandCodyrecently did an interview withETto promote the upcoming Game4Paul fundraising event. During the course of the interview, Caleb revealed that he andVin Dieselhave talked about the potential to bring back Brian at some point. Here is what he had to say.

“I had a phone call with Vin for about an hour and we really discussed this a while back. He wanted [our] blessing. [Diesel asked if it] would be acceptable to maybe bring Paul’s character back… to really kind of let his fans know he’s still out there.”

BothCalebandCody Walkerhelped to finishPaul Walker’s unfinished scenes forFurious 7, along with quite a bit of CGI. We last saw Briandriving offinto the sunset after finding peace with Mia and his family. It was a very touching way to close his character’s arc, but apparently, the idea of bringing him back with the help ofCalebandCodyonce again isn’t out of the question. While it is certainly technologically possible, it seems unlikely that it would come to pass.

The brothers also mentioned thatVin Dieseland Universal are incredibly dedicated to honoringPaul Walker’s legacy and don’t want to do anything that would tarnish it. They wouldn’t include a cameo of any kind without everyone’s blessing. Given the massive success ofFurious 7and the very positive reception to the way that the studio and creative team behind the movie handled his untimely death, resulting from a tragic car accident in 2013, it would be a huge gamble to do anything else withPaul Walker’s character.

TheFast and Furious movieshave grossed nearly $4 billion worldwide at the box office, butFurious 7was far and away the most successful movie in the franchise. The movie grossed $1.5 billion last year, nearly double the gross of the still incredibly successfulFast and Furious 6.Fast and Furious 8is due out on April 17 next year and the studio already has plans for a ninth and tenth installment. Will either of those movies feature a Brian O’Conner cameo? While they probably shouldn’t, it seems like we can’t entirely rule out the possibility.
