Much like past seasons,Arrow Season 4is set to introduce quite a few new characters pulled directly out of theDC comic books. Heck, it’s even bringing backHellblazerfrom the failed NBC seriesConstantine, withMatt Ryanset to reprise his title role. But there are two superhero characters who we’ve been told will never show up on the small screen. The Dark Knightand theMan of Steel. And we only haveBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceto blame for that. ButArrowstarStephen Amelldoesn’t think it will always be this way. He actually envisions a day when Bruce Wayne will come to Star City (yes,Starling Cityis getting a name change this year).
Stephen Amellwas one of the bigger stars that appeared at this weekend’s Wizard World Comic Con, taking a break from his intense match against Stardust atWWE SummerSlam 2015. There,ComicBookMoviemanaged to catch a couple of quotes fromOliver Queen. The actor believes that Arrow can definitely introduce Bruce Wayne at some point during the series, even withGothamcurrently setting up his origin story on Fox.
Stephen Amellsays DC Entertainment chief Diane Nelson is enthusiastic about a possible crossover. The idea could definitely move froward, though they don’t want there to be any ‘unnecessary character overlap’. The actor does understand how tough it will be to integrate someone as iconic as Batman into The CW superhero landscape as it is currently set up. But he’s optimistic about how the show runners will handle such a big step in further expanding the small screen DCEU. About bringing in the Dark Knight,Stephen Amellhad this to say.
“In the same way that… [Ezra Miller’s] playing the Flash in the cinematic universe - theoretically, we haven’t seen him yet - I see no reason why we couldn’t have our own Bruce Wayne. That’s my opinion; that might not be DC’s opinion, and they’re the bosses.”
Arrow introduced its own version of theSuicide Squadbefore the movie was announced, but the big screen incarnation has kept Harley Quinn off the small screen. Back in July of last year,The FlashproducerGeoff Johnsclaimed thatBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicewas keeping both heroes off the small screen as well, and that it would be awhile before either showed up, in costume, ready to fight crime along side Oliver Queen or Barry Allen.
“You’ll see a lot of DC universe characters [on The The Flash and Arrow]. You won’t see Batman or Superman. We’re on production on Batman v Superman now. So you’ll see characters like The Atom or Firestorm, but no not Batman or Superman right now [on TV]. It’s a separate universe than film so that the filmmakers can tell the story that’s best for film. While we explore something different in a different corner of the DC universe. We will not be integrating the film and television universes.”
While we probably won’t see Batman or Superman in Arrow Season 4, we will get to see the return ofConstantine. It’s a crossover that originally started as a plea to getConstantineback on the air at a different network. Though that didn’t work, a deal was struck that allowsMatt Ryanto reprise his Hellblazer character on The CW.Stephen Amellwas a strong component in gettingConstantineback on the air in some form. About finally filming scenes withMatt Ryan, the Arrow star had this to say.
“I’ve been filming scenes all week long with Matt Ryan. He is such a treat. And a trip. He’s always saying his lines - and he’s getting ready to go on Broadway right now with Keira Knightley, so he’s always saying those lines, too. I can’t tell if he’s having a conversation with me, or preparing. And sometimes I chime in, he’ll be like ‘I wasn’t talking to you, mate’.”
Constantinewill only appear in a single episode of Arrow, the fifth of the new season titledHaunted. No plot details have been revealed at this time. Though, it is believed that Matt Constantine will have a hand in reviving White Canary via the Lazarus Pit before she moves over to CW’s spring seriesDC’s Legends of Tomorrow. It isn’t known ifConstantinewill appear onDC’s Legends of Tomorrow, but it has been said that each season of that show will serve as its own limited mini-series, with some of the major heroes dying. It’s possible that he could be a prominent fixture in one of the upcoming seasons if The CW decides to continue past Season 1. What do you think? Do you want to see Batman make his way to Arrow? Or is the show better off without the caped crusader?
