Hugh Granthas been making a few unexpected appearances in movies recently. Having turned up in a cameo in Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion, Grant will soon be seen in another uncommon role; as the assumed villain ofDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. However, while promoting the film at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con, Grant has an unexpected encounter of his own thanks to being followed for three days by a fan in a hot dog costume.
Hugh Grant has become best known for playing roles in romantic comedies such asLove, Actually, Notting Hill,andFour Weddings and a Funeral, but his new role as Rogue Forge Fitzwilliam, a human who has made himself the Lord of Neverwinter in the newDungeons & Dragonsmovie, promises to give Grant a new type of role.
His appearance at San Diego Comic-Con was one that Grant was unsure of before his arrival, as he couldn’t help but feel “old” compared to hisDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesco-stars. However, it turned out that his worries about being met with “dead silence” on his arrival were unfounded, and fans loved meeting him at the event. In an interview withCollider, Grant recalled how one fan actually loved him a little too much. He said:
“There was only one person at that convention who really loved me, and he was dressed for the whole three days as a hot dog. And he followed me wherever I went. I couldn’t shake him. Do you remember the hot dog? I was terrified. I still have nightmares about him.”

Dungeons & Dragonshas been a phenomenon of the table-top gaming world for decades. As well as being a dominant force in its own medium, the franchise has spawned a successful 80s animated TV show, spin-off video games, books and has even been a driving inspiration behind many aspects of theNetflix seriesStranger Things. However, one thing it has not provided is a successful big-screen adaptation.
In 2000, a Jeremy Irons-led movie brought hope of theD&Dfranchise making its mark in theaters. It did, but in all the wrong ways, receiving bad reviews and bombing at the box office. A number of sequels followed in a straight-to-video format, with a definite sense of diminishing returns from a not-that-high starting point.
So far,Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesseems to have one of the best chances to break theDungeons & Dragonsmovie curse. With an ensemble cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, Sophia Lillie, and Justice Smith, the star power of the movie is certainly on display. However, as with many projects based on much-loved fantasy IPs, the tale of the tape will all come down to whether the movie’s writing lives up to the high expectations of die-hardDungeons & Dragonsfans, as well as the general public.
