The casting of HBO’sHarry PotterTV series has already caused a stir whenannouncing some of the main adult cast members, including John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Paapa Essiedu. And now the internet is having its say on the most important character castings for the new series based on the novels of J.K. Rowling – those of Harry, Hermione, and Ron. As expected, the initial reactions have shown both the best and worst of social media for exactly the kind of reasons you already expect before you read any further.
The official Warner Bros. announcementthat the magical trio will be played by newcomers Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione), and Alastair Stout (Ron) was met with enthusiasm by many, with some even saying that the new actors are more accurate in some ways than the original movie castings of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. But there have been plenty of those opposed to the project from the start, and they have made it clear that these castings were not going to pass without the usual controversial reactions.

According to @StudyDragonsNFT on X, Warner Bros. has made the worst mistake possible in picking “inexperienced” actors to take on the roles previously played by…hmm, unknown actors. “Never seen ANY of these three in leading roles before, should have picked people with more experience.”
‘Harry Potter’ Image Reportedly Reveals First Look at Massive Set for Iconic Location
It looks like there really is being no expense spared on the new Harry Potter series as first look at elaborate set shows.
There were obviously plenty of people eager to announce their feelings about the role of Hermione not being played by a white actress, something that that pre-empted by a number of people long before the casting announcement, but others had a slightly less angry approach to addressing Stanton’s appointment as the new Hermione. @anotherarizonan said, “Interesting choice for the girl who gets harassed endlessly as a mudblood.” Sadly, why this is relevant has been seen in a number of reactions already before the series has even begun filming never mind airing.

Naturally, the biggest challenge for the three youngHarry Potterleads is following in the footsteps of those who came before them. It is bad enough when a reboot replaces an actor after a couple of appearances, but millions have grown up watching Radcliffe, Watson and Grint playing Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively, for a decade across eight movies. This is something @haydenphilly pointed out, saying, “These kids have a brutal task to follow up the originals. I feel for them because it’s essentially doomed from the start.”
However, despite the controversies and detractors, there are a lot of people who think this new threesome can be just as popular and successful as their predecessors. @minimoon32002 said, “These kids are adorable. I don’t care if the remake is gonna be bad, I’m still gonna give it a chance.” Another comment by @anthonysfilmlog said, “I genuinely wish the new Harry Potter cast the best of luck and hope people remember that these are just kids doing their best.” @Kitty8Lunar simply said, “Book accurate Hermione.”

Of course, this is not the last round of casting for the new series, and even once all the roles have been filled, opinions will continue to be shared once the show finally arrives on HBO and HBO Max in late 2026/early 2027.
