Last month, Marvel bossKevin Feigeteased that the star and director forCaptain Marvelwill be announced this summer. WithCaptain America: Civil Warofficially kicking off bothPhase 3and the summer movie slate, it sounds like we’re getting close to an answer on who will steer theCaptain Marvelship. A few interesting things have happened over the past couple of days that have fans speculating that untested indie shorts directorEmily Carmichaelmay have landed the job.

Screen Geekhas the initial report. They were alerted by a fan who has been following the pre-production on theCaptain Marvel movievery closely. And they were able to connect some social media dots that led them to believeEmily Carmichaelmay have landed this coveted job. It appears that one of thetwo screenwritersrecently hired by Marvel,Nicole Perlman, began followingCarmichaelon Twitter. Not a big deal. Until the next step in the chain happened.

Emily Carmichaelposted an image of herself onInstagram. The caption accompanying the photo originally read, ‘On my way to aDisney meeting’. But as you can see, that has since been changed to ‘I look a way’. Most are speculating that theindie directorlet the big news slip too soon. But when it comes to social media, it’s always too late to retrace any steps accidently made. Now it looks like the cat may be out of the bag.

Some believe thatEmily Carmichaelis an odd choice forCaptain Marvel, as she has never directed a feature film before. Only a handful of independently produced shorts. Yet, it sounds exactly like the type of move Marvel might make. And we have to remember that VFX geniusTim Millerhad never directed a movie beforeDeadpool, and that has gone onto become one of the biggest blockbuster hits of the year.

Emily Carmichael’s shorts are said to fit within the Marvel mold, and they hold the same tone. She has shown off her films at Sundance, Tribeca SXSW, 25 New Faces of Independent Film and more. At this time, it should be noted thatJurassic WorldandStar Wars: Episode IXdirector Colin Trevorrow and his screenwriting partnerDerek Connollyalso follow the woman. It isn’t known how soon, or by what venue Kevin Feige and his team at Disney will announceCaptain Marvel. But it sounds like she is definitely doing something with the studio. We’ll keep you posted as more news breaks.
