A few years back, Blumhouse and writer-director Christopher Landon proved that a PG-13 slasher movie could work with their teen-friendly masked killer movieHappy Death Day. In fact, that teen-slasher flick was so popular that it spawned a sequel earlier this year with the silly-titled follow-upHappy Death Day 2U. And today we’re hearing that Blumhouse has begun developing a third (and final?) entry in the teen slasher series,Happy Death Day 3.
Truth be told, I’m not sure I’m excited forHappy Death Day 3. I mean don’t get me wrong, I was all kinds of ready to check outHappy Death Day 2Uwhen it hit earlier this year. But then that sequel was far too silly for my liking. In fact, I think it’d be hard to label the follow-up as a horror-comedy as it seemed like it was a straight-up comedy to this guy. Boring. Anyhow, I’d say I’m up for a third film in the franchise as long as they re-up the horror/slasher aspects and downplay the silly teen-comedy high jinks. But I’m probably not the movie’s target audience so what do I know?
For those not in the know, the originalHappy Death Daytold the time-traveling tale of a blissfully self-centered collegian namedTree Gelbman. Tree wakes up on her birthday to find that not only is she being stalked by a masked serial killer, but she’s stuck in a time-loop. Now she’s going to be super-killed over and over and over until she figures out who the killer is. That’s one hell of a killer premise, right?! Hell, yeah. From there,Happy Death Day 2Upicked back up with good old “Tree” who wakes up in horror to learn that she’s stuck in a parallel universe. Yep. But not just that, here in this alternate universe, it’s not just Tree that’s being hunted by a baby-faced masked murderer. Now it’s also her friends and fellow students that are in danger of getting the axe as well. It gets overly complicated from there.
Both movies starredJessica Rotheas Theresa “Tree” Gelbman along with Israel Broussard as Carter Davis, Ruby Modine as Lori Spengler, and Rachel Matthews as Danielle Bouseman. Charles Aitken rejoined the cast as well as Gregory Butler, along with Rob Mello as John Tombs, Phi Vu as Ryan Phan, and Caleb Spillyards as Tim Bauer. Jason Bayle rounded out the returning cast as David Gelbman, with Laura Clifton returning as Stephanie Butler, Tran Tran as Emily, and Blaine Kern III as Nick Sims.
