It’s no secret thatCatwomanwas a total dud when it was released in theaters in 2004. While star Halle Berry did as well as could be expected with the movie’s creative direction, it didn’t leave viewers impressed, serving as one of the most-criticized comic book movies of all time. It was a “winner” of multiple Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. Berry personally took the Razzie for Worst Actress, and proving herself to be a good sport, she showed up in person to accept the award.

Recently, Berry had a chat with Vanity Fair about her career. Reflecting on her Razzie forCatwoman, Berry opened up on what led to her happily accepting an award that was in actuality criticizing her performance. Essentially, asHalle Berryshowed while holding her Academy Award in one hand forMonster’s Ballwhile accepting the Razzie with the other, she believes in taking the good with the bad. It also serves as a reminder that winning an Oscar doesn’t make someone “better” than anyone else and she accepts her missteps along with her successes.

“I went to theRazzie [Awards]because I feel like we all take ourselves so seriously. If we get an award, if we get the Oscar, we somehow are made to feel like we’re somehow better than everybody else, but we’re really not. You were just chosen that year by your peers, and you were acknowledged for doing what they considered stellar work. If you find yourself face to face with a Razzie, does that mean you’re the worst actor there ever was? Probably not. You just got the piss taken out on you that year by a group of people that can. If I can show up to collect an Oscar when you’re honoring me, I can certainly show up to collect a Razzie when you say, good try, but do better. I always learned that if you may’t be a good loser, then you don’t deserve to be a good winner. So I went there and made fun of myself.”

While Berry had a fun time at the Razzies, she didn’t necessarily want to keep the award hanging on her wall. The actress added that she “had a great time and then I set that thing on fire,” suggesting that it’s long been disposed of. She also addressed some of the problems withCatwoman, and looking back, she feels that part of the reason it fell short was that it had the superhero taking on a beauty face cream company rather than a dangerous supervillain or another major threat, as with most other superhero movies.

“I would totally change the story. I would change the characters. I would have Catwomansaving the world from some catastrophelike male comic book characters get to do. I wouldn’t be just saving women from their faces cracking off from some cream. I would make it more substantial and I would set it in a grittier, more modern world.”

Halle Berry has recently said she’d like todirect a newCatwomanmovie, perhaps as a form of redemption for that previous movie she starred in. For now, fans will see the next incarnation of the character inThe Batmanwhen Zoe Kravitz takes over the role. This news comes to us fromVanity Fair.
