Yesterday, we reported thatSuicide SquaddirectorDavid Ayerwill be tackling a new DC project entitledGotham City Sirens, which reunites him withMargot Robbie, reprising her role as Harley Quinn. This project has been in the works for a few months, withMargot Robbieherself taking this film to the studio, with the initial report claiming that other DC female characters like Batgirl and Birds of Prey will be featured. Today we have confirmation of two more female DC villains that will be joining Harley Quinn, thanks to directorDavid Ayer.
The filmmaker took toTwitterearlier today to reveal a piece of artwork that featuresHarley Quinnalongside iconic DC villains Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman and Ivy Pepper, a.k.a. Poison Ivy. Both of those characters were mentioned in yesterday’s report, but this image from the director himself seems to cement their involvement in the movie. We’ll likely have to wait quite some time to find out who will play these characters, and it remains to be seen whether or not initially-rumored characters Batgirl and the Birds of Prey will be included in this story. Yesterday’s report also revealed that a new writer has come aboard, so perhaps a different approach is being crafted.
Christina Hodson, who was part of theTransformerswriters room who is currently writing theBumblebeespin-off, came aboard to write the script in November. Oddly enough, yesterday’s report revealed that another female writer from that same writers room,Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who is also writing theTomb Raiderreboot andSherlock Holmes 3, has now come aboard to writeGotham City Sirens. Our very first report on the movie revealed thatMargot Robbiewas working with an unidentified writer before she took the project to Warner Bros., but it was never revealed who that writer was.
Yesterday’s report also revealed that this movie, whichMargot Robbieis also executive producing, is farther along in development thanSuicide Squad 2and the studio’s proposedDeadshotspinoff, which would bring backWill Smithas this DC villain. DC Films’Geoff Johnswill produceGotham City Sirensalong withJon Berg. No specific plot details have been released at this time, but, now that the titleGotham City Sirenshas been revealed, it is believed to be based on the comic book of the same name.
TheGotham City Sirenscomic book was created byPaul Dini, launching its first issue in June 2009, as part of the DC Comics' Batman relaunch. The comic featured all three of these villainous females, Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy, working together as one group. The comic series was canceled in 2011, to make way for the New 52 reboot, which was relaunched by writerJudd Winnick. It’s also worth noting that, earlier this month,VikingsstarKatheryn Winnickexpressed her interest in playingBlack Canary, but it hasn’t been confirmed if that character will be featured in this movie. While we wait for more onGotham City Sirens, take a look atDavid Ayer’s tweet below, which confirms Harley Quinn, Catwoman and Poison Ivy.
