Just over one year ago, the legendary Japanese studio Toho, which first brought a big screen icon to life with the 1954 classicGodzilla, announced a newGodzillafilm, which was eventually titledGodzilla: Resurgence. Back in December, the first trailer was released, but it only gave us a tease of the monster. Today,Toho Movie Channelunleashed the secondtrailerand a new poster forGodzilla: Resurgence, which is set for release on July 29. And as you can see, the original Gojira is on full display. Toho has brought this iconic creature back to its roots with an all new action-thriller that finds the big green lizard smashing Japan to pieces.

Toho has released 28Godzillamovies since the 1954 original classic, which was directed by Ishirô Honda. The studio last releasedGodzilla: Final Warsback in 2004, and licensed the rights to Godzilla to Warner Bros. for directorGareth Edwards’remake, which earned $525 million worldwide, $26 million of which came from Japanese markets. Given the renewed interest in thefranchise, Toho decided to produce another Godzilla project, andGodzilla: Resurgencewas born.

Hideaki Anno is directing and writing the screenplay, while Shinji Higuchi will oversee the visual effects work. The filmmakers are best known for their work on Neon Genesis Evangelion and the recent live-action movieAttack on Titan. Toho will co-distribute the film with Warner Bros. Japan. Warner Bros. is currently prepping directorGareth Edwards’Godzilla 2sequel, which will be released in June 2018.

The only cast members listed on the film’s IMDB page are Satomi Ishihara, Hiroki Hasegawa,Alex Hormigoand Yutaka Takenouchi. Very little is known about the plot thus far, aside from the fact that Godzilla wreaks havoc upon an unsuspecting Japanese city. Hopefully we’ll see more action-packed footage before the July 29release date, although that date is only for the Japanese release.

Since Warner Bros. Japan is co-distributing, it’s possible thatGodzilla: Resurgencecould get a U.S. release later this year, but that will likely depend on how this action-adventure fares at thebox office.
