The movie is the third installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse and earned less than 2014’sGodzilladebut at $93 million and 2017’sKong: Skull Islanddebut at $61 million. With that being said, the movie was able to land another $130 million internationally, which ends up with a global total of $179 million.Godzilla: King of the Monstersreportedly cost over $200 million to produce.
Taking the second spot this weekend is Disney’s live-action adaptation ofAladdin, which brought in $42.3 million in its second week in theaters. So far, the remake has been exceeding expectations and gaining critical acclaim. The third spot this weekend goes to the debut of the Elton John biopicRocketman. The movie was able to earn $25 million domestically with an additional $31.2 million overseas, giving a global haul of $56.2 million. Not bad for a project that only cost Paramount $40 million to make, which is already gettingBohemian Rhapsodycomparisons.
Blumhouse’sMadebuted at number four this weekend with an impressive $18.2 million. The psychological thriller stars Octavia Spencer and only cost $5 million to produce.John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellumfell to number five this weekend after earning $11.1 million. To date, the Keanu Reeves-starring action movie has brought in over $221.6 million and already has a sequel scheduled.
Avengers: Endgametook number six at thebox officethis weekend after bringing in $7.8 million. The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has been in theaters for over a month now and is struggling to catch up to James Cameron’sAvatar, which is the highest grossing movie of all time at $2.78 billion. As of this writing,Endgameis at $2.71 billion.Detective Pikachufell to number seven after earning $6.6 million. To date, thePokémonmovie has brought in over $392.1 million globally with a price tag of $150 million.
Olivia Munn’s directorial debut took the number eight spot this weekend after bringing in $3.3 million. The teen comedy has been gaining some momentum through word-of-mouth and has earned an impressive $14.3 million since launching two weeks ago. James Gunn’sBrightBurntook the ninth position after bringing in $2.3 million. The dark superhero horror movie has brought in $24.7 million globally. The tenth spot this weekend goes toThe Hustle, which was able to secure an additional $1.3 million. The comedy is a remake ofDirty Rotten Scoundrelsand stars Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson.
