The 2014 AmericanGodzillareboot was a frustrating experience for a lot of fans. Just as the action started to get good, directorGareth Edwardswould turn his camera away, saving the big monster brawl for the epic climax.Godzilla 2won’t be taking the same route. The big lizard has already been introduced, and this sequel promises to bring in even more iconicKaijufrom the original Japanese series.Colliderrecently caught up with themovie’s writer,Max Borenstein, who doesn’t think any fans will be disappointed this time around.

Max Borensteinwas at TCA to promote his new Fox sci-fi dramaMinority Report. But he didn’t mind taking a few moments to discuss his upcoming work on Godzilla 2. He didn’t want to reveal any plot details, as he is knee-deep in the midst of writing the sequel script. But he showed a lot of enthusiasm for the upcoming monster movie. He clearly enjoyed working with directorGareth Edwardson the firstGodzilla, as they collaborated on the screenplay.Gareth Edwardsis currently shootingStar Wars Anthology: Rogue Onein England, but as soon as that wraps, he’s diving head-first into Godzilla 2.

Godzilla 2 already has a set release date ofJune 8, 2018. It is once again being produced by Legendary Pictures. And at Comic-Con 2014, it was revealed that iconic Japanese KaijuRodan, Mothra and Ghidorahare all being included in the action. At this point in time,Max Borensteinisn’t ready to discuss how these giant creatures are being introduced into the story, or what they will be doing. He did have this to say, however, when asked if he was for sure coming in to write the sequel.

I’m doing it. I’m writing it now, and it’s really going to be great. I don’t want to go off book and tell you anything that I’m not allowed to tell you. The response to the first film was really exciting, but now that that world is established, we can do bigger and even better things. We’re really stoked."

So, just how much ‘bigger’ and ‘better’ will it be? We’re not sure, but the inclusion of three new monsters means it’s going to be out of control, with a climax that promises all will be involved. The relatively difficult nature of setting up the narrative was accomplished in 2014’sGodzilla, so the writer and director will really be allowed to play within this world. They will be able to expend the breadth of what we last saw on screen, and it can’t help but be a more exciting movie. About re-collaborating withGareth Edwards,Max Borensteinhad this to say.

“He’s making Star Wars right now, so he’s a little preoccupied, but yeah. Gareth is amazing. It’s exciting to get to work with him again. One of the fun things about that experience is the same fun that it’s been on [Minority Report], where you really get to have your fingers in the pie.”

Are you excited to see whatGareth EdwardsandMax Borensteinare able to do with Godzilla 2? Or does it already sound like there are too many monsters in the kitchen? And what about a King Kong crossover withKong: Skull Island? Is that the next step in this shared Legendary Universe? We’ll have to wait and see!
