It looks like Amazon are taking stock right now and bringing down the curtain on several of their shows that are not paying their way. Following theshocking announcement thatThe Wheel of Timewould not be renewedfor a fourth season, Prime Video has now dropped dance dramaÉtoileafter a single season despite a two-season order being in place.

According toDeadline, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet dramedy series has struck its end pose much earlier than expected, and will not be returning for a new season as originally planned. Having been given an order for two seasons, this would have come as a surprise to many, including the show’s creators, who were also behind the hit seriesThe Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Just likeThe Wheel of Time, it seems that money is at the heart of the cancellation, with the performance vs. cost result not going in the show’s favor.

R.I.P.: 19 TV Shows That Have Already Been Canceled in 2025

With so many streaming services dropping new shows every week, it’s a bloodbath out there. Casualties are bound to pile up.

Why Was ‘Étoile’ Cancelled at Prime Video?

While the cancellation of any TV series is never down to one reason alone, it seems thatÉtoile’sfate was sealed by the lack of interest from audiences. In the end, if people aren’t watching, no streamer is going to keep producing it. Nielsen figures revealed that the show did not break into their Top 10 at the time of its release – despite dropping all of its episodes in one go – and although it debuted at the top of Prime Video’s TV chart, a week later it was dethroned byReacher, despite the Alan Ritchson action series having not released any new episodes in over a month at that point.

The writing was possibly on the wall for the series even before it aired when considering the history of Sherman-Palladino’s previous work. Coming from a dance background, the show was a bit of a passion-project for theGilmore Girlscreator, and while fans of her work clearly tuned in, few others seemed inclined to give the show a click when it appeared on Prime Video’s banner carousel. WhileGilmore GirlsandPrime Video’s ownMrs. Maiselserieswere both strong performers, Sherman-Palladino’s other ballet-themed series,Bunheads, also became a very short-lived affair.

Étoiledid not hold back on its production values and even set up a ballet company of top dancers from around the world, which would certainly add to the costs of the series. With the viewership clearly not being of Prima Donna level, only the breaking of its two-season order makes Étoile’s cancellation surprising, but it will have left fans disappointed at the various plotlines that were left hanging at the end of the show’s run.
