TheGhostbusterstrailer officially dropped yesterday. And aside from a growing group of blatant misogynists who’ve hated the idea of an all-female team from the get-go, there were two major problems that most other fans had with this inaugural sneak peek. One? It was too long for a teaser. And Two? It abandoned Ray Parker Jr.’s original theme song. A new fan-cut of the trailer fixes both of these problems. And the result is nothing short of awesome.
Of course, we get thatPaul Feigis trying to create something new with the 2016 Ghostbusters, which trades in a bunch of goofy middle-aged men for a slightly younger crew of goofy women. But he does a great disservice to the fan base by abandoning the iconic theme song. Something Star Wars wasn’t even bold enough to do in rebooting its series for a new generation. Everyone knows the words. Everyone loves to dance along. And it brings a certain nostalgic excitement to the footage that is clearly missing from what we saw yesterday.
Paul Feigdoes promise that there is a new version of the legendary 1984Ghostbusterstheme song, which we can hear in the trailer released yesterday. But anyone who has grown up with the movie, including young kids who’ve been shown the movie by their parents, are accustomed to the Ray Parker Jr. version. And speaking for ourselves, that’s certainly what we wanted to hear. And now that we see it matched with the footage, it has us more excited than we were yesterday.
Set in an alternate universe where the original Ghostbusters never existed, the story centers on Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) andAbby Yates(Melissa McCarthy), who, years ago, wrote a book that posited ghosts do in fact exist. The plot picks up with Erin acquiring a teaching position at the prestigious Columbia University, but she is laughed out of academia once word of her book surfaces. At the same time, Abby is working with a new partner,Jillian Holtzman(Kate McKinnon), just as a new slew of ghosts begin to invade New York City. Erin ends up joining forces with Abby and Jillian, along with a new partner Patty (Leslie Jones), to save the Big Apple from these ghosts.Kristen Wiighad this to say about her character.
