HBO has finally released a new trailer forGame of Thrones Season 7, which will premiere Sunday, July 16 at 9 PM ET on the pay cable network. This trailer sets up the three who will all be vying for control of Westeros in both this season and the final season, slated to debut in 2018. This video showcases the long walk to the throne for three separate leaders, The King of the North, Jon Snow (Kit Harington), the Khaleesi herself, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and the current occupant of the Iron Throne, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). At the end of the Season 6 finale, all of the pieces were coming into place for an epic Season 7 on HBO.Daenerys Targaryenwas seen setting sail with her massive fleet to Westeros, with the help of Dorne, along with Theon (Alfie Allen) and Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan), to stake her claim to the Iron Throne. After spending the past two seasons in Braavos, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) had finally returned home as well, where she was seen using her skills learned at the House of Black and White to kill one of the nefarious men on her infamous kill list, Walder Frey (David Bradley), the man responsible for orchestrating the Red Wedding in Season 3. Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) was also dropped off just before The Wall by the long-missing Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle), with Bran’s greensight vision revealing that Jon Snow is actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) sister, instead of Ned Stark’s bastard, as he was told from birth.
We also learned in the Season 6 finale that Jon Snow has been named King of the North, even though the rest of the Northerners, andJon Snowhimself, still think he’s a bastard, and not a true member of the Stark family. While it remains to be seen how much more footage will be unveiled before the July 16 premiere, we saw in set photos that leaked last fall that an alliance may be forming, with Jon Snow seen meeting with Daenerys Targaryen, which also marks what is believed to be a tense reunion for Jon Snow and Theon Greyjoy. With Sansa Stark back in Winterfell, Bran just north of The Wall, and Arya back in Westeros as well, many fans are hoping for a long-awaited Stark family reunion, since none of these characters have been seen together since the first season.
As for Cersei, she pulled off one of the most cunning and deadliest moves in the show’s brutal history in the Season 6 finale, when she ignited the barrels of wildfire stored underneath the Sept of Baelor to blow up the entire building, killing off all of her enemies, including theHigh Sparrow(Jonathan Pryce), along with the Queen herself, Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) and her brother, Loras Tyrell (Finn Jones), who had been in the midst of his trial when the explosion happened. While The Mountain (Hafthor Julius Bjornsson) kept King Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) from leaving the Red Keep, to keep him safe, it didn’t matter, since after the explosion which killed his wife the Queen, King Tommen took his own life by leaping from his window in the Red Keep.
