The video game fandom came out in a big way to supportA Minecraft Movie, which woke up the box office from its slumber with a massive $163 million opening weekend. Don’t be surprised if you hear sequel talk soon, but other whispers have now emerged in the wake of its success.Fortnite, which is another hugely popular online video game first released in 2017 by Epic Games, has been at the center of movie rumors, and those rumors have only gotten louder after it became clear thatA Minecraft Moviewas going to be a big box-office success. WithA Minecraft Movieonce again proving that video game adaptations are a smart thing to bet on, it makes sense that fans feel aFortnitefilm can’t be too far behind…and now Epic Games' CEO has provided a definitive answer.

After a known leaker reported that aFortnitemovie has been in and out of the works, X/Twitter user @ShinnaBR, who happens to be partnered with Epic Games, stated, “EPIC GAMES DECONFIRMS FORTNITE MOVIE RUMORS!!” The post then indicated that said leaker made claims that there had been multiple conversations about aFortnitemovie in the past. However, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games himself, has made it clear this was not true by bluntly responding, “False.” That puts an end to that discussion for now, but withA Minecraft Movie’ssuccess, they have to be thinking about the potential ofFortnite’sbox office supremacy.

Fortniteis available in seven game modes that share the same general gameplay. These includeFortnite Battle Royal,Fortnite: Save the World,Fortnite Creative,Lego Fortnite,Fortnite Festival,Fortnite BallisticandRocket Racing. A movie version could take on various plot points depending on where a screenwriter and studio wanted to take it and, with that much narrative potential, it’s hard to believe that amovie version isn’t already being explored. All the versions ofFortnitehave been successful, but a likely movie adaptation could involveFortnite Battle Royal, which is a battle royal game that allows up to 100 players to be the last ones standing. This version of the same drew more than 125 million players in less than a year, and it has generated a huge profit for Epic Games. All told, theFortnitecraze has generated $40 billion in revenue since it launched in 2017.

‘A Minecraft Movie’ Could Pave the Way for Many More Video Game Adaptations

In the wake of its success, it might surprise you to learn that gettingA Minecraft Movieto the big screentook some serious effort.Minecraftlaunched in 2011 and has become the best-selling video game of all time with over 300 million copies sold and a staggering 170 million active monthly users helping make it a success. The fact that it’s taken until 2025 to get an adaptation made, and the box office that’s followed, shows that patience has paid off. And that similar patience could also work out well for aFortnitefilm should one ever get the greenlight.

Despitecritics turning their backonA Minecraft Moviewith a 48 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, fans are clearly enjoying the film.Perhaps a little too much, in some cases. For Warner Bros., a studio in need of a hit following some expensive misfires, the opening topped the $162 million debut of theirBarbiemovie.
