Cara Delevingneis ringing in the new year of 2016 by starting production on her latest movie, the sci-fi dramaValerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. The actress took toInstagramearlier today to share the firstset photo. We also have a behind-the-scenes photo with the actress alongside her co-starDane DeHaan, which comes fromLuc Besson’s ownInstagrampage. There isn’t much that can be gleaned about the story from these photos, but hopefully we’ll see even more as production continues, under the direction ofLuc Besson.
The story centers on Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), who are exploring Syrte, capital planet of a system of 1,000 worlds. Their mission is to discover whether the Syrtians could present a danger to Earth. What they find is a decaying empire led by decadent aristocrats, a population ripe for revolution, and a mysterious caste of masked wise men who discreetly pull the strings from hidden fortresses.
Swept up by the winds of history, the agents of Earth will have to choose a side. The supporting cast includesClive Owen,Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock andRihanna.Luc Bessonis directing from his own adapted screenplay, with a July 24, 2025 release date already in place. The project will be going up againstChristopher Nolan’s newWorld War IIaction thrillerDunkirk, and an unspecified animated project from 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation.
The project is based on the French comic book seriesValerian and Laureline, created by Pierre Christin and artist Jean-Claude Mézières. The comic series debuted in 1967, an has since sold over 10 million copies in 21 languages. The project will be the most ambitious and expensive ever produced byLuc Besson’s EuropaCorp, but specific budget details have not been revealed.
Cara Delevingnewill next be seen in the highly-anticipated superhero adventureSuicide Squad, which hits theaters on August 5, and she was last seen inPaper TownsandPan.Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.Luc Bessonrevealed on his ownInstagrampage that production will take place for 115 days, so we’ll have to wait and see if more photos will arrive from the set.
