F1could be Brad Pitt’s own version ofTop Gun: Maverick, and it helps that the same guy is behind the wheel and in the director’s chair forthe upcoming race-driving drama. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the film follows a veteran race car driver (Pitt) who mentors a “hotshot rookie” played bySnowfallstar Damson Idris. The official trailer has finally been released, and it lives up to the lofty expectations longtime fans of the actor and filmmaker have held since the film’s inception.
As the trailer teases, it is clear the DNA ofTop Gun: Maverickhas transferred over toF1, but with some natural tweaks. Pitt plays the lead role of Sonny Hayes, a Formula 1 driver who was a major player in the 1990s, until an accident changed the trajectory of his career forever. Now, he has a chance to redeem himself, but he’ll have to get through some growing pains, including mentoring another promising young driver, seemingly a reflection of his own short-lived past. The banter between Pitt and Idris already jumps off the screen, and we haven’t even mentioned the visually spectacular driving sequences. you may check out the trailer below.

You Won’t Believe the Surprising Movie That Made Brad Pitt Cry

In addition to Pitt and Idris,F1stars Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, and Javier Bardem. Read the official synopsis forF1:

“Dubbed ‘the greatest that never was,’ Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you’re able to travel alone.”
‘F1’ Director Teases an Exhilarating Film With a Focus on Story
During a press conference for the trailer debut ofF1, director Joseph Kosinski explained how the film features plenty ofheart-pounding race sequences, but it all requires a sturdy foundation, stating, “it doesn’t mean anything if you’re not telling a story supported with great characters.” And thus, Kosinski worked hard to craft a film that, likeTop Gun: Maverick, is supported by an “incredible script” and an all-time great casting job.
“It all starts with the script, and we worked with Ehren Krueger, who also worked on ‘Top Gun Maverick.’ He wrote an incredible script for us to start with. And then the most important thing a director does beyond developing the script is casting. Casting is everything. And the group of actors that we pulled together for this film is pretty incredible. Javier Bardem and Brad together, their friendship, which is an old one- three decades old, really is the core of this story and this film, and just seeing them together on screen is really special.”
Of course, there is no guarantee thatF1will have the same commercial and critical success asTop Gun: Maverick, but it’s hard not to see the resemblance. However,F1has the chance to put its own spin on the formula, no pun intended.
