It’s been four years since writer and director Ryan Coogler’s production company, Proximity Media, closed a television deal with Disney. The intention was always to expand the world of Wakanda after Coogler redefined what comic book movies could be with his 2018 blockbusterBlack Panther, which broke box office records, received numerous award nominations, and became a cultural phenomenon. While it’s taken some time to get there, the first series centered around the fictional nation is finally here:Eyes of Wakanda. The animated anthology series debuted on Disney+ at the beginning of August, and initial reviews already indicate that it maintains the same impressive quality as theBlack Pantherfilms.
On the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes,Eyes of WakandaSeason 1 boasts an impressive 90% rating based on 20 critic reviews. Although no critical consensus has been posted as of this writing, the review blurbs provide enough indication that the animated series is well worth watching. Empire Magazine’s review ofEyes of Wakandastates that despite not having a “popular hero” at the center of the story, the focus on Wakanda and its principles helps the show’s themes and story work to “great effect.”

The MCU returns to Wakanda.
MovieWeb’s review ofEyes of Wakandadescribes the animation as “visually bold,” while also noting that the short episode count of the first season “leaves viewers wanting more.” Another review states that the series is a “refreshing return to Wakanda,” allowing for impressive world-building for the nation at the heart of two of the most impactful films in the MCU. Overall, it seems that the latest Disney+ animated series mostly hits the mark.
‘Eyes of Wakanda’ Is an Exciting and Important New Piece to the Sacred Timeline
One of the most interesting aspects of theEyes of Wakandastory is that it takes place within the MCU’s “Sacred Timeline” and has been incorporated into the timeline viewing order on Disney+. The other two animated series released on the streaming service,What IfandYour Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, take place in alternate universes and timelines.Eyes of Wakanda, set in the mainline history of the MCU, will hopefully encourage fans to watch and explore more of Wakanda’s history.
Thanks to the series taking place in the distant past,Eyes of Wakandais also technically the first on the list in a chronological viewing order of the MCU. Moreover, despite taking place long before the firstBlack Panthermovie, certain events at the end of the series help tie everything together in a beautiful way. There are numerous teases throughout the series about the broader MCU (and even a possible dark future) that can get hardcore fans excited.

With its unique animation style and fun, unconventional world-building,Eyes of Wakandais worth watching on Disney+, especially since it’s only four episodes long. While fans may still have to wait for some time untilBlack Panther 3,Eyes of Wakandaseems like the perfect series to tide them over.
