HBO’sGame of Thronesis deep into production on its final season, with recentGame of Thrones Season 8 set photosteasing a major battle in King’s Landing. While the show has been immensely popular from the beginning, there has been no shortage of controversy, with several fans still angry about the show’s portrayal of graphic nudity and sex scenes, but those aspects of the show have never bothered one of the show’s biggest stars, Emilia Clarke. During a new interview, the actress reveals how “annoyed” she’s getting from having to defend the show’s use of nudity and sex, while expressing her love for another show that uses both sex and nudity,The Handmaid’s Tale, which became the first series from a streaming service to win the Emmy for Best Drama Series, which was helped in part byGame of Thronesnot being eligible this past year.
“I’m starting to get really annoyed about this stuff now because people say, ‘Oh, yeah, all theadult sites went downwhenGame of Thronescame back on.’ I’m like,The Handmaid’s Tale? I f—ing love that show, and I cried when it ended because I couldn’t handle not seeing it. That is all sex and nudity. There are so many shows centered around this very true fact that people reproduce. People f–k for pleasure, it’s part of life.”
This isn’t the first time that theMother of Dragonshas defended the show’s use of sex and nudity. During a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress reminded her fans that she hadn’t disrobed since Season 3, although she was still proud of those scenes, making it clear that those scenes were all her, and not a body double. She also took to her Instagram account in 2015, when a Daily Mail article alleged that she, “can’t stand sex scenes.” She responded by stating that she’s perfectly fine with nude scenes or sex scenes that “forward a story or is shot in a way that adds insight into characters,” but if that’s not the case, she’ll make sure to discuss that scene with the director, if it’s gratuitous.
While this flagship series is in fact coming to an end, we won’t likely see the last of Westeros anytime soon. HBO has already put into development fiveGame of Thrones spin-offs, with author George R.R. Martin working with writers Max Borenstein (Godzilla,Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass,Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Brian Helgeland (Mystic River,L.A. Confidential) and Carly Wray (Mad Man), along with longtimeGame of Throneswriter-producer Bryan Cogman on these shows, although no details have been given yet.
