A24’s live-actionElden Ringmovie is one of the most anticipated video game adaptations currently in the works.Civil WarandWarfaredirector,Alex Garland, is helming the adaptation of FromSoftware’s bonkers and incredibly difficult video game (which wasco-written byGame of Thrones' George R.R. Martin). Oftentimes, directors of video game adaptations might not have prior knowledge of the IP, and might play through the game once for research purposes. Sometimes, they don’t even do that. But Garland is setting a new standard for video game movie research, and fans will be incredibly happy to hear how dedicated he is to the project.
Alex Garland recently spoke with IGN to promote the upcomingzombie horror sequel,28 Years Later, directed by Danny Boyle, and the writer was asked about his work on the eagerly anticipatedElden Ringmovie. The English writer/director bluntly noted that “I’m not going to say anything about it,” regarding the video game adaptation’s plot or progress. But, like any FromSoftware fan, he did take the time to reveal which extremely difficult boss fight he found laughably easy, while also proving himself to be a true fan of the video game.

The Best Action Video Game of the Year Is Getting a Movie (But Not How You Think)
Henry of Skalitz is coming to the big screen… but not how fans were expecting.
“Ohh, Radahn’s really easy,” Garland said, referring to one ofElden Ring’s bosses who’s most definitely not “really easy.” When asked who the most difficult boss was, Garland said the most popular answer: “No, it’s Malenia who’s the tough one.” Although Garland did admit to using the summons to defeat the bosses, which die-hard FromSoftware fans will no doubt scoff at. Ultimately, Garland’s knowledge of the video game is a great sign for the upcoming adaptation. But, Garland isn’t just any oldElden Ringfan, he’s hardcore:

“I’m now on the seventh playthrough of that game. I’ve leveled up. I’ve got lots of juice, and a cool sword, and stuff like that, and I just throw myself at them again, and again, and again, and again. That was the technique I learned withDark Souls. It’s not that you get better, it’s more like monkeys and typewriters. You just keep doing it and eventually, one day they’re dead.”
A24’s ‘Elden Ring’ Movie is Still a Mystery
Aside from the official confirmation from A24 and Garland aboutElden Ringbeing in the works, very little is known about the upcoming movie. The game features the kind of complicated and convoluted plot that is often associated with FromSoftware’s grimdark fantasy video games. Hopefully, Garland’s adaptation won’t tell the story through item notes and characters with creepy laughs.
One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the film is how Garland will handle the boss fights.Elden Ringfeatures gigantic and disgusting creatures, inspired by everything from Kentaro Miura’sBerserkto John Carpenter’sThe Thing. While A24 has begun pushing towards high-budget filmmaking, the studio isn’t known for creating the type of grand-scale movies thatElden Ringwould likely require. So, it will be interesting to see how Garland and A24 handle the IP.
