Disney has released a brand new international trailer forDumbo. This is the next in an increasingly long line of remakes that Disney has been doing of some of their most beloved animated classics. For this one, they went back to the well where these remakes really got started, enlisting Tim Burton, who previously helmed their live-actionAlice In Wonderland, to bring the beloved flying elephant to life for a new generation. And he really did bring the adorable little guy to life.
Dumbocenters on Holt, who was once the star of a circus. However, he was changed a lot by the war and, upon his return, he simply wasn’t the same and couldn’t return to his former life. Circus owner Max Medici sill finds a use of Holt, assigning him to take care of a young elephant whose gigantic ears have made him a laughing stock. But when Holt’s children Milly and Joe find out that the young elephant can use those big ears of his to fly, and entrepreneur named V.A. Vandevere and acrobat Colette Marchant devise a scheme to turn him into a star.
Originally released in 1941,Dumbowas one of the early success stories forDisneyanimation and has endured over the decades. Tim Burton has certainly delivered a mixed bag, in terms of quality, with his movies over the course of the last decade or so, but he does, in many ways, feel like the right guy to help bring this story to life. Not to mention that 2010’sAlice In Wonderland, despite the fact that critics largely weren’t buying what he was selling, grossed $1.02 billion worldwide. That kind of money is still rare, but it was for more rare back then.
In the years since, Disney has found success withother live-action reimaginingssuch asMaleficent(which currently has a sequel in the works),Cinderella,The Jungle BookandBeauty and the Beast. For the most part, these endeavors have proved to be very profitable and the studio has many more similar projects coming down the pipeline, includingMulan,The Little Mermaid,Lady and the Trampand a Cruella de Vil movie starring Emma Stone. This year will also see the release of
Guy Ritchie’s {Aladdin(May) and Jon Favreau’sThe Lion King(July).
Thescreenplay comes from Ehren Kruger(Transformers: Age of Extinction) The cast includes Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green and Alan Arkin. Early on it seemed like Will Smith was going to sign on to star, but he ended up taking a role as Genie inAladdininstead. This marks the first time that Keaton and Tim Burton have worked together sinceBatman Returns, also making for a reunion with DeVito, which makes it feel a bit special.Disneyis set to releaseDumboin theaters on March 29.
