Or was he?Deadline has confirmed that Arquette will returnto star inScream 7, due to release in 2026, and MovieWeb recently caught up with the longtime actor to learn more about his experiences in the films over the years — and what he thinks about Kevin Williamson taking the reins as director of the upcoming installment.

“I love Kevin, and for him to be able to direct one of theScreammovies is so cool and a wonderful opportunity,” Arquette told us. “He was so instrumental in creating this world to start with, with Wes Craven, of course, right? For him to be able to direct, it’s really wonderful to see. He’s such a talented person as a writer, as a director, and just a great guy altogether.”

Original Scream Star Had a Twisted Role in Scream 3 Until Columbine Changed Everything

The Scream star explains how his character Stu Macher almost returned in Scream 3 and went to a very dark place.

Given the current 25-year milestone ofScream 3, Arquette also took time to reflect on whichScreamfilm experience was perhaps the most memorable from decades past. “The first one was something really special, that first group. And just meeting Wes Craven, working with him for the first time, really, it changed my life. And he really had an impact on my life beyond just acting. He really was a wonderful mentor,” explained Arquette, adding:

“Scream 3was a trip because we filmed it by Paramount, in Los Angeles. So everybody was sort of going back to their houses. It’s a different experience of when you’re on this location and everybody’s sort of there together — you get to know everyone a little more. And then there was like a movie inside a movie. It was an interesting one. We had a lot of cameos in that, these really interesting characters. And Carrie Fisher, I think, and all these, like, interesting people to meet and be a part of it. So it was funny to be a part of.”

From a Deputy in ‘Scream to a Crooked ‘Mob Cop’

As fans eagerly await the release ofScream 7, they can enjoy watching Arquette play an entirely different kind of law enforcement agent inMob Cops, hitting the masses this week. It’s the latest"dirty cop" flickto be added to a red-hot film and TV genre, and Arquette opened up to us about his complex character — who is based on a real person:

“Part of the thing about playing a character like this, this crooked cop, was that he didn’t see himself as, you know, really doing anything bad. He saw himself as taking bad people off the streets. A few people get hurt in the crossfire. That’s, like, part of the challenge of it all.”

“And then they got paid for it. So I could take care of my family. And you know, he wasn’t like the other character that [my co-star Jeremy] Luke plays, where… he wants all this fame and prestige,” added Arquette. “At least this is how, in my head, as an actor, I justify it — because this is how I would see this guy justifying it, where he’s doing it for his family.” From Lionsgate,Mob Copswill be released in theaters, on demand and on digital Friday, July 21, 2025.
