A newChild’s Play TV seriesis currently in development by franchise creator Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner. Mancini was previously toying with the idea of bringing Chucky into the World War II era and though that idea seems pretty strange, even for Chucky. The creator says he has a ton of ideas to continue the story after last year’sCult of Chuckie. Which leads us to the idea of the new TV series and how it will continue to tell the story of the murderous doll.
No network orstreaming servicehas been announced yet, but Don Mancini is planning for theChild’s PlayTV show to be an 8-part series. For fans hoping that Mancini and David Kirschner will totally reboot the franchise to start fresh for Chucky, you’re out of luck. The new TV series will be a direct continuation ofCult of Chucky, taking place directly afterwards. TheChild’s Playfranchise has the rare distinction of never being rebooted. Instead, the franchise, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, had soldiered on, continuing from where the last project ended.
There are no other details surrounding the project yet and all we know is that it is in the development phase, which means that if and when it happens, it’ll be awhile. TheCult of Chuckyended with Fiona Dourif’s Chucky-possessed Nica riding into the sunset with Jennifer Tilly’s Tiffany. So, where does the story go from there? Only Don Mancini knows (or maybe he doesn’t just yet) where Chucky will be heading next. However, this won’t be his first TV adventure, since the last handful ofChild’s Playmovies have all been direct-to-video releases.
Though not many details have been released about theChild’s PlayTV series, Don Mancini is promising darkness. The franchise creator claims that this will be a dark and creepy affair, and coming from him, that actually sounds pretty scary. He also noted that they will use theChild’s Playtitle in for the series. He had this to say.
“We plan to useChild’s Playin the title. We want to definitely signal that we are going dark, darker than ever before. It’s going to be verycreepy.”
Brad Dourif will return to voice the evil Chucky doll and the whole idea sounds like something to look forward to. Hopefully everything goes as planned and we see aChild’s PlayTV series sooner than later. Who knows, maybe we’ll see Chucky get involved in some creepy time travel to gofight Hitlerin World War II. Stranger things have happened. Apparently, the TV show will not affect the release of moreChild’s Playmovies, which is something that Don Mancini stressed. So, don’t worry, there’s going to be a lot more Chucky coming our way for the years to come. The original report about theChild’s PlayTV series comes to us fromBloody Disgusting.
