‘Call The Midwife’ Is Getting a Prequel TV Series Set in WWII

Call the Midwifewas initially based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, a nurse who worked in London’s East End during the 1950s.Call the Midwifehas already ventured outside the scope of Worth’s books and will again with the prequel series.

In Worth’s first book,Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times, she provides a historical summary of midwifery in Britain prior to her personal experiences. In this, shepraised the midwives at Nonnatus House, noting they worked “among the poorest of the poor and for about half of the nineteenth century they were the only reliable midwives” in the area.Worth alsospecifically mentioned how these midwives, “Remained in London and endured the Blitz with its intensive bombing of the docks. They delivered babies in air-raid shelters, dugouts, church crypts, and underground stations.”
