Bruce Campbellhas been covered in a lot of fake blood during his years playing Ash Williams in theThe Evil Deadfranchise. However, in the actor’s own words, it is not a process that he would ever call enjoyable.
Although Bruce Campbell has now seemingly hung up his chainsaw for good when it comes to on-screen appearances as his iconic character, back in 2016 the actor was back for more Deadite action in the unexpected and very welcome Starz sequel seriesAsh vs Evil Dead. While speaking toInverse, the actor explained how the methods used to splatter him with fake blood had become more sophisticated since his early years in the role, but the substance itself was just as “repellent” as it ever was.

“They have a pressurized beer keg that they’ve converted into a blood keg. Pressurized tubes going in one end, and it shoots it out the other. Very complicated. It’s a very terrifying device. [In the movies], we had a whole different system: you blow sh*t through a green garden hose. We’re much more sophisticated now.
But it’s roughly the same repellent mixture that it always was. It has, you know, food dye in it and things like that, so it’s doesn’t taste good or smell good. It’s a strange unpleasant substance. I don’t enjoy any blood in my face regardless of how it’s delivered. It’s not an enjoyable process, but it’s effective.”

Even though fans would be more than happy for Campbell to strap on his chainsaw again for another run out as Ash Williams, it seems that the actor has finally moved on entirely from stepping in front of the camera in his most famous role. However, he really has not moved away from theEvil Deadfranchise, and most likely never will.
Evil Dead Rise
This year’s release ofEvil Dead Risebecame the first majorEvil Deadproject to not feature Campbell at all (Fede Álvarez’ 2013 reboot included a surprise cameo appearance post-credits). Despite that, Campbell was once again acting as executive producer on the movie along with original franchise director Sam Raimi, and shared a number of updates throughout filming and post-production, including a note that he had been messing around with many of the movie’s sound effects to verify there were plenty of “groovy” classicEvil Deadnoises in the mix.
