Brooklyn Nine-Ninehas had a hectic ride. From getting canceled to being one major hit, it is one show that is still being discussed. Of course, this comedy series has much more to give than one could expect. With its perfect sense of humor and the necessary addressing of real-world topics,Brooklyn Nine-Ninewent on to receive rave feedback and ratings,including a 95% on the Tomatometer.
Andy Samberg’s Jake Peraltamight have been the center of attention throughout the series, but there might be some characters that deserve to be discussed more. These are the strong female leads of Nine-Nine. From the very first episode, the three female characters of Amy, Rosa, and Gina have illustrated not only their strengths but also their varying qualities. Even if they are contrary to one another, the bond between these three is quite strong. They might burn each other, but they are definitely some strong pillars that have upheld the Nine-Nine for years. What is even better is that the creators have not letJake nor any other male characterovershadow these three female leads. Thus, it is worth noting how Amy, Rosa, and Gina act as strong female leads who have contributed immensely to the show’s success.

Prioritizing Their Goals and Dreams
Amy Santiago, played by Melissa Fumero, might not have given off the most positive first impression during her introduction as she came off as a very rude and uptight detective but as the show progressed Amy became one of the absolute favorites. From the pilot itself, Amy ensured that everyone, including the audience, was aware of her ambitions. She was not only hard-working, but she was also determined to prove that she is one of the best detectives. This might’ve been seen as competitiveness during certain instances; however, she goes on to prove that being a woman does not mean that one has to sacrifice their dreams in a field that is primarily male. What is better is that even after her marriage to Jake and the birth of their son, Amy went on to pursue her dreams and successfully achieve her goals.
A similar character is Gina. Played by Chelsea Peretti, Gina Linetti is one character that is over-confident. Even though she is not a detective or as book-smart as Amy, Gina is portrayed as a street-smart character who is capable of winning anyone’s heart through her confidence. She ends up becoming a mother and a successful entrepreneur. She is yet another character that did not allow gender norms to prevent her from achieving success. It is also safe to say that Gina is probably the wealthiest character by the end of the series.
The extremely tough and rarely smiling Rosa Diaz, played by Stephanie Beatriz, is different from both Gina and Amy. She is one character who does not end up having babies or marrying, which is undeniably a brilliant take. This goes on to show how motherhood and marriage aren’t necessary options for women. Rosa ends up running her own business as a private investigator. What is notable about her persuasion of dreams is that Rosa uses her skills and experience to tackle corruption, especially to bring justice to women and people of minority communities.
Thus, by ensuring that these three female leadsend the show by reaching the peak in their careers,Brooklyn Nine-Ninehas sent a strong message on women empowerment.
Extremely Intelligent and Strong in Their Own Ways
Something that definitely strikes out about these three leads is that they have their own strengths and their own flaws.
Amy is not only quite intelligent, fierce, and extremely organized, but then and there she has also proven her ability to become a brilliant leader. This is especially evident duringthe third Halloween heist where she outsmartseveryone. It also proves how she might even be much more brilliant than Holt and Jake. Additionally, her ability to understand people, especially Jake and Holt, makes her the ideal leader. Unfortunately, her biggest flaw is being a perfectionist to the extent that she suffers during high-tensed situations like exams.
Rosa is obviously the character that everyone fears, including Holt and Terry. Her physical strength comes off as her biggest asset, and it also brings up the argument that physical strength is not limited to men. What is more interesting is that Rosa might seem like a tough person, but as the show progresses it is revealed that she has more depth and a soft heart like any other character. This is made especially obvious through her bond with Holt and Jake.
As mentioned before, Gina may not be intelligent in a conventional way. However, she is a super smart person who is able to not only run a successful business but also outsmart the other detectives so as to win the heist.

Women Empowering Women
More often than not, there is a poor portrayal of female friendship in cinema. The trope of women being competitive or jealous seems to be the common route taken by many.Fortunately,Brooklyn Nine-Nineclearly steps away from this negative pathand instead resorts to a strong bond between three unlikely characters.
The way in which Amy, Gina and Rosa have one another’s back is one of the best parts of the show. As Gina leaves the percent, it is made obvious that these women are keen on empowering one another. This is also revealed whenever Rosa goes to extreme lengths for Amy, like entering a baby-stroller contest.
At the end of the day, it can be clearly stated that Amy, Rosa, and Gina are the strong female leads the Nine-Nine needs.
