Brendan FraserandSarah Michelle Gellarhave selected their next project — and it’s a pretty original one. The two ‘90sicons will join Annie Murphy, Josh Gad, and Elizabeth Hurley forBreaking Bear, an animated series produced by streaming serviceTubi, and it’s apparently a mash-up betweenYogi Bearandmobster stapleThe Sopranos. Bring out the Gabagool, Boo-Boo! This time it’s the bears who are hunting criminals.
PerDeadline’s report, the adult animated series will see Fraser and Gellar as members of a “dysfunctional family of bears who go full criminal to stop frackers, mobsters, and a psychotic wolf pack from destroying their home. As they spiral deeper into the criminal abyss, they face off against biker gangs, an egomaniacal news anchor, and their own spectacular talent for self-sabotage.” The two actors will executive produce alongside Gad and Julien Nitzberg. Tom DeLonge (yes, as in punk band Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge) will also participate as executive producer with his company To The Stars Media, alongside Evoke Entertainment, Stan Spry, Jeff Holland, and Bradford Bricken.
The following are the character descriptions for each performer:
Fraser plays Jer. The oldest of the bear siblings, Jer fancies himself the brains of the operation. Unfortunately, he’s not only wrong – he’s lazy, clueless and usually the one getting everyone into hot water. If there is a wrong move to make, Jer has already made it.
Gellar plays Blair. The middle sister and actual brains of the family. Constantly overlooked, Blair’s the one who ends up cleaning her brothers’ messes up and keeping the family alive – whether they notice or not.
Murphy plays Tawny. A human, she’s a gorgeous local news anchor whose number one goal is getting ahead in her field to become the next big national newscaster. Hurley plays Wolf Queen, the fierce and unyielding guardian of the forest. She is locked in a bitter rivalry with the Bears, whose growing presence and destructive ways threaten the land she is sworn to protect, by any means necessary.
Gad plays Alistar. The baby brother of the family, Alistar swings wildly from adorably anxious to full-on unhinged with zero warning. Push him the wrong way, and this teddy bear turns terrifying.

Adam Lewinson, Chief Content Officer at Tubi, was excited to announce the show as a “wild, no-holds-barred send-up of classic mob sagas—fromScarfacetoGoodfellas.” He described it as “bold” and “chaotic,” and we can’t help but agree with him because, after all, the woods seem like a nice place for mobsters to indulge in their usual shenanigans.
The Renaissance Continues for Gellar and Fraser
After winning an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2023 for his performance inThe Whale, Fraser has seen a well-deserved resurgence in his career. He appeared in the Martin Scorsese historical thrillerKillers of the Flower Moon,and played a very funny law enforcement officer in the crime comedyBrothers. Fraser also served as narrator for the recently released Disney nature documentarySea Lions of the Galápagos, and he has two projects in post-production: the war filmPressure, where he will play President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the comedy dramaRental Family, directed by Hikari.
On the other hand, Gellar is also seeing her career grow after staying away from the spotlight in the 2010s. She has appeared in shows likeDexter: Original SinandWolf Packin minor roles, and recently, she was confirmed to star in the horror sequelReady or Not: Here I Come. However, her most important upcoming project is aBuffy the Vampire Slayerrevival, where she willreprise her original characterfrom the series.
There is currently no release date available for ‘Breaking Bear.’
