The reason forBetter Call Saulending isn’t directly specified byAMC, but it’s certainly not due to a dip in quality. From the start, theBreaking Badspin-off has been incredible television in almost every way, making it a big hit with critics and viewers. Its fourth season was its highest-rated yet on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring a near-perfect 99% Fresh Rating, with all three prior seasons tying at 97% Fresh. Viewership has fallen since the start of the series and is certainly not as high asBreaking Badwas, though the show has maintained a large fanbase and has more than enough viewers to justify its time on the air.
So, why end the series? More than likely, this is simply because of time running out.Better Call Saulmostly serves as a prequel series toBreaking Bad, taking place in the years leading up to Walter White creating his empire. As the seasons have progressed, we’ve been coming ever closer to the start ofBreaking Bad, which would require bringingBetter Call Saulto an end. As even the end of season 4 leaves us feeling like we’re getting pretty close to the end of the timeline, there had been speculation thatBetter Call Saul season 5would also serve as the show’s final season. With this in mind, fans can be happy knowing they’ll be getting two more seasons to close the series out rather than just one more.
Bob OdenkirkleadsBetter Call Saulas rising lawyer Jimmy McGill, who comes to adopt the aliasSaul Goodmanwhen practicing law. The show also features many other returningBreaking Badstars, including Jonathan Banks as Mike, Giancarlo Esposito as Gus, and Laura Fraser as Lydia Rodarte-Quayle. It seems probable that we’ll eventually see Aaron Paul and/or Bryan Cranston appearing for special cameos as Jesse Pinkman and Walter White at some point within the upcoming two seasons, though no word has yet been announced on bringing them in.
Better Call Saulwill kick off its fifth season with a special two-night event on Feb. 23 and 24 on AMC. It’s wonderful to know that we’ll be getting another season of this wonderful series once the upcoming season ends, but also bittersweet knowing that season 6 is as far as it will go. Still, as with the originalBreaking Badseries, all good things must come to an end, so let’s hope the show bows out with a final season that’s been just as strong as those to come before it.
