Bad news,Dirk Gently. And bad news for those who worked on the show, because they’re going to need to find a new gig. Following the Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency season 2 finale, it’s been announced that BBC America will not renew the show. So those hoping to seeDirk Gentlyseason 3 next year are out of luck. Probably. Here’s what BBC America had to say about the decision tocancel the showin a statement.
“We are beyond proud of thisbrilliant original seriesand so appreciative of the outstanding team behind it including Max Landis, Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, and many many others. It was a privilege to work with this talented and passionate group of writers, producers and actors on these two seasons of Dirk. Thanks also to the passionate fans who embraced this fantastically novel world.”
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, commonly referred to as justDirk Gently, centers on the titular holistic detective who investigates cases involving the supernatural. The series, which ran for a total of 18 episodes, is based on theDirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agencynovel series, written by Douglas Adams and published by Simon and Schuster in 1987. Adams wrote two novels, with the sequel,The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soulpublished in 1988. A third book,The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time, was published in 2002 after Adams' death, but wasn’t a complete novel. So there wasn’t likely a whole lot moresource materialfor the show to draw on, were it to continue. Though, there’s a small chance we could see a third season happen.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agencywascreated and written by Max Landis(Chronicle), with Robert Cooper serving as showrunner. Samuel Barnett starred as the titular detective, with Elijah Wood playing his reluctant assistant.
