Based on a True Storyis a delightful dark comedy thriller on Peacock that fits right in with the latest influx of modern whodunit shows that poke fun at societal obsession with both true crime and podcasting. It combines these loves into one hilarious story about a couple expecting their first child, dealing with life challenges, and finding opportunities in the most unlikely of places. They have discovered the identity of alocal serial killer, and it just so happens to be someone they know.
Rather than turn him in, Ava (Kaley Cuoco), who figured out the mystery thanks to her amateur sleuthing skills, thinks they should capitalize on it. Create a podcast interviewing the killer anonymously, and they could make, well, a killing! So long as he agrees to stop actually killing, of course. The first season ended with the tragic death of a character that had fans believing the man identified as the Westside Ripper was behind it.But Season 2 presents a reality that is far from what everyone expected.

What Happened to Ruby in ‘Based on a True Story’ Season 1?
However,Ruby (Priscilla Quintana), their friend Simon’s (Aaron Staton) snotty wife, is getting suspicious. When she sees a text with Ava accusing Matt of killing the woman in question, a lady named Dahlia Stone (Lizzie Broadway), who had been talking openly about being the only survivor of the Westside Ripper, she figures out what’s going on. She thinks Matt isthe serial killerand realizes Ava and Nathan are behind theBased on a True Storypodcast.
Later, when Ava and Nathan attend a dinner auction at Simon and Ruby’s house,Ruby confronts Ava about the burner phone she found with the implicating message on it. She even confirmed her theory by calling Matt on the burner and seeing him pick up a phone. Rather than threaten to go to the police, however, Ruby wants in. She sees that the podcast is taking off, and she wants a piece of the action. As leverage, she advises that she swiped DNA from Matt’s wine glass so she would have proof if she needed to go to the police. Ava tries to save herself by admitting they are behind the podcast but saying Matt is just a family friend pretending to be the killer to help them make money off the scheme. But Ruby isn’t buying it.

There are other things going on as well, and Ruby and Simon get into a heated argument about the fact that he paid off her lover, Carlos (Sebastian Quinn), to leave her. Simon snaps and kills his dog, which is actually Nathan’s dog he was hoping to be able to buy back now that they have the money. Matt defuses the situation, butAva and Nathan’s world comes crashing down when they get word that their controversial podcast has been removed from Spotify. It’s all because of a Tweet from Jessica Alba callingthe anonymous podcastersmorally depraved from profiting off the deaths of innocent women.
When Ruby gets through to Nathan by appealing to his lust for her, he begs Ava to cut Ruby into the podcast. She is adamantly against it, and to make up for his misdeeds, Nathan buys the beach house they have always wanted in Malibu. But shortly after the couple arrives, there’s a knock at the door.They open it to find Ruby’s dead body slumped on the welcome mat, a blue dart in her neck. They need to get to work to dispose of the body, and Matt, who they believe is behind the murder, refuses to help. Just as they finish cleaning the blood from the kitchen floor, Simon walks in and puzzlingly asks whose blood it is.
Who Really Killed Ruby in ‘Based on a True Story’?
All signs in Season 1 pointed to Matt having killed Ruby. He must have gotten wind of what she planned to do and wanted to eliminate the threat. But there’s a massive surprise twist in Season 2. After visiting Tom in Mexico, where Nathan and Ava sent him to try and rehab his killer impulses, Tom tells Nathan that he did not, in fact, kill Ruby. He says he saw what happened and claims in thecrazy plot twistthat it was Simon who did the deed.In a fit of rage, Simon killed her. When he left the room, Tom swept in and did what he did best, taking the body and hiding the evidence. Of course, that meant dropping it at Nathan and Ava’s doorstep so they could deal with the problem.

When Simon returns to the room, he’s flabbergasted, wondering where her body went. Ironically, in a flashback in the beginning of Season 2, Ava and Nathan impulsively lie and tell Simon the blood is Ava’s, and she’s having the baby early. As it turned out, she really was going into labor. The frantic nature of the situation meant Simon didn’t have a chance to question why there was so much blood. Matt, meanwhile, planted evidence to pin the murder on Simon, and he went to jail. Months later, with their baby born and Matt in Mexico, Ava and Matt are feeling guilty that they sent their friend to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. But in actuality, he did, in fact,commit the crime.
When Nathan finds out the truth, he frantically texts Ava to tell her because she just so happens to be at Simon’s house with him. He posted bail, and she felt guilty and wanted to visit. But now that she knows the truth, she fears for her life. She manages to fend him off by spilling her precious breast milk onto his electronic tagging device. Since he’s on house arrest, an officer immediately calls him, and he’s unable to chase after Ava.
It’s a Twist No One Saw Coming in ‘Based on a True Story’
The fact that Matt didn’t kill Ruby isn’t evidence that he has changed his ways. He is a brutal, sadistic killer, after all. It’s unclear if he had intended to do so but didn’t get the chance to because Simon beat him to it or if he had something else in mind. Nonetheless,this marked one of the biggest twists of the showso far that no one saw coming. It was assumed by the main characters and viewers that Matt was behind Ruby’s murder. This act suggested that Ava and Nathan were in far too deep, andMatt had not kept up his part of the bargain to stop killing.

The revelation of the truth takes the guilt off Nathan and Ava for sending their friend to jail. However, it also raises questions about Matt and whether he truly is reformed. Of course, those who watched through all eight episodes of Season 2 know the answer. For now, it appears that Ava and Nathan might not be the only depraved people among their group of friends. Simon has a vicious temper and isn’t able to control himself.
Simon felt remorse and seemingly didn’t mean to kill Ruby. But the fact that he killed both a dog and a human in one night shows there’s a lot of deep-seated anger and evil beneath his surface. His threats to Ava with her newborn baby present make him arguably just as bad as Matt.
