Last week, Marvel revealed part of an interviewwithAvengers: Age of UltrondirectorJoss Whedon, where he gave new details about the villainous Ultron (James Spader) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Today,Marvelhas released yet another portion of that same interview, whereJoss Whedonteases that his sequel will include even more new characters who have yet to be unveiled yet. When asked by Marvel’sLorraine Cinkif we will be seeing “Marvel characters who aren’t yet in the preview photos” or “Marvel characters that we’ve seen in other films or other parts of the universe,” the director simply responded, “Yes.” Who could these characters be?
It’s worth noting that when the official poster was released last month, it included a full cast list that confirmed several cast members who were not yet revealed, includingAnthony Mackie(Falcon),Hayley Atwell(Peggy Carter),Idris Elba(Heimdall),Don Cheadle(War Machine) andStellan Skarsgård(Erik Selvig). Of course, it’s possible thatJoss Whedonwas referring to these characters, since we haven’t seen any of them in the official trailers or posters quite yet, but there could also be a few more surprise characters nobody knows about quite yet. It’s possible that he could also be referring toChadwick Boseman’sBlack Panther, who is confirmed to appear inCaptain America: Civil War, but has also been rumored to pop up inAvengers: Age of Ultronas well.
Joss Whedonalso revealed that he planned to include Vision inAvengers: Age of Ultronbefore he even signed on to directMarvel’s The Avengers. Here’s what he had to say below.
“When I first started talking about doing anAvengersmovie, I was like, ‘I don’t know if I should do anAvengers, but if you do a second one, the villain should be Ultron and he creates Vision and (Paul) Bettany has to play him.’ Look at those cheekbones. He’s Vision. He has a stillness that goes beyond British that is something just unique and emotive. He’s going to blow people away.”
The director also talked about the inclusion of Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), who were first seen in the end credits sequence ofCaptain America: The Winter Soldier. Here’s what he had to say about why he wanted to introduce these powerful siblings.
“Besides the fact that I grew up reading about them, and that, for me, they’re really part of the DNA of The Avengers, it was really important for me to have people who would change the game emotionally and stylistically. Their powers are completely different, so through them, we get to see things differently. When we’re at speed with him, and he’s going fast and everything else is slow, it’s not like we’re trying to do some enormous slow guy set piece, it’s just this is something we could have done in the first movie. I never want to get so stylistic that you’re pulled out of what you’re seeing, but at the same time, I wanted to be able to shoot something that was kind of poetic. Her magic, his speed, the way they hate the Avengers, it just adds so much to the palate. The two of them are so ridiculously great too.”
When asked if Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be getting along better as a team, the director offered this cryptic response.
“There are two things you want to see in this Avengers. You want to see them getting along, and you want to see them not getting along. What we find is they can get along great, they’re a team, but it’s a thin wall between that and chaos. They do kind of get torn apart a little.”
