As most of you guys know good and well by this point in time, Amazon not only has a TV series based on author J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy book seriesLord of the Ringsin the works, but the show is already in pre-production. And it looks like everything is going to plan for Amazon and this new series as today we already have word that the show has been renewed for a second season.
Sure, such an early season two renewal speaks to the assumed quality of the upcoming first season, which once again is already in pre-production over in New Zealand. But it’s really just a good plan forAmazonwhich shelled out untold millions back in November 2017 for the global TV rights to the book - and already planned multiple seasons and spin-offs from the word go. You see, this quick renewal will allow there to be lessThe Lord of the Rings-less time for fans in between the season one finale and the season two premiere. Cutting down on the time between seasons is something that I’m thinking we’ll be seeing more and more of as the years of this super TV resurgence continues.

As you might imagine then, the first season now plans to take a substantial break afterJurassic World: Fallen KingdomdirectorJ.A. Bayonagets the first two episodes in the can. Amazon Studios' head Jennifer Salke confirmed that the reassembling of the writer’s room has been commissioned to go ahead and get started on breaking the second season. The planned 4-5-month hiatus for season one will then allow the powers that be behind the scenes to map out and write a good amount of the scripts for the second season.
For those that may need a (no pun intended) primer on this new Amazon Prime version ofThe Lord of the Rings, it has been confirmed that this series will be aprequel to Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ringand will explore new storylines set in Middle Earth.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are the showrunnersand also serve as the series' executive producers along with Belén Atienza, Lindsey Weber, Bruce Richmond, Gene Kelly, Sharon Tal Yguado, Gennifer Hutchison, Jason Cahill, Justin Doble, and the above-mentionedThe OrphanageandJurassic World: Fallen Kingdomdirector J.A. Bayona. Ron Ames is the producer while consulting producers are Bryan Cogman and Stephany Folsom. Amazon Studios is, obviously, the studio behind the scenes.
The cast of this upcomingThe Lord of the Ringsreboot-prequel hasn’t been confirmed by Amazon. But that said, rumor around the campfire suggests that the producers are looking to lock down talents such asThe Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn TreaderandMaze Runner: The Death Cureactor Will Poulter,Picnic at Hanging RockandRomper Stomperactress Markella Kavenagh, andGame of ThronesandIn the Heart of the Seaactor Joseph Mawle. We’ll let you know when we hear more. Meanwhile, thisThe Lord of the Ringsseason 2 renewal update comes to us fromDeadline.
