DirectorGuy Ritchiehas provided an update on the development of Disney sequel,Aladdin 2. Speaking withCollider, Ritchie declared that they are now “kicking” ideas around for the live action follow-up. However, while the project has been officially announced as moving forward, Ritchie did add thatAladdin 2is still in something of a “wait and see” type situation.

“I’d very much like to. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed that experience. It was a great experience. That whole Disney thing, as you can imagine, is such a professional outfit. Just from that perspective, it was so much fun. I would very much like to, we’ll wait and see. We have been kicking some ideas around for some time now, but it’d be great to do, it would be great to go back there.”

Released back in 2019,Aladdinis a live-action retelling of Disney’s beloved 1992 animated movie and tells the story of a street urchin named Aladdin who falls in love with a Princess Jasmine and befriends a wish-granting Genie. Directed by Guy Ritchie from a screenplay he co-wrote with John August,Aladdinstars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen,and was a major success for the House of Mouse, grossing over $1 billion worldwide.

Plot ideas and ideas forAladdin 2currently remain a closely guarded secret and are locked down in the Cave of Wonders.

Will Smith Will Return as the Genie in Aladdin 2

Despite recent controversies, namely The Slap Heard Around the World, Ritchie has been adamant that Oscar winner Will Smithwill return as the Genie in theAladdinsequel. “I wouldn’t have any issue casting Will Smith in anything, because, as I say, he was just the f—ing perfect gentleman,” the filmmaker said recently when asked if Smith would be back.

Recent reports have also since claimed that Smith will be back in blue forAladdin 2, even stating that the Genie will “play an “even bigger part” in the sequel than in the 2019 movie.”
