There’s been a lot of talk about a female director taking the reins of a newStar Warsproject, butA Wrinkle in TimedirectorAva DuVernayis not the woman for the job, according to her.A Wrinkle in Timehas been hotly anticipated for months now, but so far, the critics have not been so kind to the Disney movie, prematurely calling it a disaster. However, the movie has yet to be released in theaters, so it remains to be seen how it will do against the mightyBlack Panther.
Depending on your outlook, Ava DuVernay politely declining taking over aStar Warsproject may be a good thing after thereviewsfromA Wrinkle in Timehave started to surface. DuVernay was praised on Twitter forA Wrinkle in Time’s visuals, which were compared to Lucasfilm’s work withStar Wars. Ava DuVernay thanked the fan for their praise ofA Wrinkle in Time, but as far as taking on another franchise, she simply said, “Star Wars is not for me…”
Ava DuVernay previously offered someadvice to J.J. Abramswhen he was in post-production forThe Force Awakens, so she is no stranger to theStar Warsuniverse, but she still does not want to officially join as a director on any of the upcoming movies. The director also previously turned down the chance todirect Marvel’s Black Panther, citing concern that it would not “be a DuVernay film.” The director would rather do projects on her own that don’t have to fit into a giant franchise and have to deal with a ton of fans who’ll be angry at her no matter what is released.
J.J. Abrams recently finished the script forStar Wars 9and filming is expected to start in July. However, Abrams, along with Rian Johnson have seen intense criticism for theirStar Warsmovies from hardcore fans who want them to be stricken from the official canon. Ava DuVernay could be skeptical for that reason alone, but Lucasfilm hasn’t had the best track record with sticking to their directors over the past few years. Ron Howard was brought in to finishSolo: A Star Wars Storyafter Phil Lord and Chris Miller were let go and J.J. Abrams was brought back forStar Wars 9,after Colin Trevorrow had been let go.
Taking on aStar Warsproject has to be a very daunting thing for a director to wrap their head around before officially signing up, so it’s understandable why Ava DuVernay might want to avoid all of the headaches involved in taking on such giant project. In the meantime,A Wrinkle in Timeis set to be released this weekend where it will have to battle the mightyBlack Panther, which DuVernay originally turned down.
